12th-century Hassan Minaret in Rabat has a beautiful feature of Almohad architecture that influenced later Western Islamic architecture, the sebka, an interlacing rhombus-like diamond network pattern. You can also see on other Almohad monuments in Seville & Marrakesh

interesting to consider how very different Christianity must have been in the 15th century when hellish visions like this were commonplace, for believers to meditate upon; see also Hieronymus Bosch. seemingly a wrathful Old Testament god was feared/worshipped, not a loving

“has it always been like this?”. hate to reference it but this observation is the opening for one of the most famous 20th century american poems from like 70 years ago

while you are enjoying your meal this thanksgiving please spare a thought for those of us rotating on a skewer under heat lamps at a temperature known in food safety assurance as "the danger zone"

if you are using "media studies" not to study how to undermine the stultifying power of masscult but rather to deify you are part of the problem and spiritually ultra-French

it's crazy how people now use "media theory" to refer to academic Buffy studies and TvTropes analysis of kids' cartoons and furry, when McLuhan's original conception was motivated by a similar impetus as people studying how to strategically avoid nuclear war

though it is arguably not as significant an aesthetic achivement, intellectually vinland saga did for christian universalism what hnk did for a sort of neotaoist-revisionist pure land buddhism

this was a real Soviet thing but not for good reasons. high culture was kind of a domesticated and safe form of aspiration in a system that didn't offer consumer goods. OK you don't have a car or a nice apartment, but you can get cheap tickets to a rachmaninoff concerto
