Is mitochondrial pathology universal in idiopathic Parkinson's disease? We find widespread mitochondrial pathology in the brain of ~25% of individuals with PD, linked to a non-tremor dominant motor phenotype. Could this be a "mitoPD" subtype? https://t.co/xXlmN7Ziui

On #WorldParkinsonsDay I'm very proud to be part of a team and institute working towards effective disease modifying treatments for Parkinson's
Each day, 80 people in the UK are newly diagnosed with #ParkinsonsDisease which affects over six million people globally. There is currently no cure. Working closely with patients, our researchers are transforming the understanding of Parkinson’s disease. 🧵 #WorldParkinsonsDay

Nothing makes you realise how fast the last 12 months have flown by more than the annual researchfish submission email. Felt like I only did it last month. Potential to harness this for time travel to the future?

As a #DoctorWho fan and scientist this is absolutely brilliant! Maybe I need to start looking at framing all my Parkinson’s research in the context of Doctor Who. Very entertaining read @Richard_D_Riley
A new #DoctorWho episode shown during the festive period, especially on Christmas Day, is associated with lower death rates in the subsequent year across the UK, finds new #ChristmasBMJ study #DrWho @Richard_D_Riley

Really proud to be part of this paper and another big chunk of work from my PhD published! Many thanks to funders @MichaelJFoxOrg and all participants involved!
It’s paper time! Our paper investigating mitochondria in fibroblasts and MR spectroscopy imaging from the same people with Parkinson’s is out in Brain. Great work everyone @Toby__Burgess @NeuroPayne @neuroshef

New double blind study results of Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in #parkinsons as a possible mitochondrial rescue agent. Great study by Bandmann and colleagues, 'Midbrain 31P-MRS demonstrated an increase in both Gibbs free energy and inorganic phosphate levels in the UDCA treatment

This Phase II trial of Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in 30 people with early Parkinson's confirmed that UDCA was safe and well tolerated, only mild, transient nausea and diarrhoea were observed....

This is huge, publishing in journals has a whole host of problems and it is encouraging to see a group of academics standing for what they feel is right. I’m sure the new journal @ImagingNeurosci will be far superior and look forward to reading it!

Unexpected highlight of the week was getting my cat printed onto a coffee which is not something I knew I needed in my life. I’m therefore now pivoting all my future research into printing my cat onto various beverages #CatsOfTwitter

We’ve done it! We’ve done it!!! 🥳🎊🍾🎉 We’ve successfully reached our target with 600 incredible people with #Parkinsons agreeing to take part in this trial of a drug to prevent falls.
