After complaints about vertical videos, Apple released this rare variant of the iPhone 4. Featuring a 960 x 960 Retina² Display, it could only record videos in a 1:1 aspect ratio.
While it was a commercial failure, it inspired the BlackBerry Passport.

It's interesting to see how the design of the current MacBook Pro is a throwback to the aluminium PowerBook G4 with some elements of the titanium PowerBook G4 too.
In case anyone's wondering, sadly you can't use a PowerPC Mac to set up an Apple Silicon Mac through a FireWire to Thunderbolt cable using Migration Assistant. However, Finder can still access the PowerBook and you can manually copy files across. The CD drive works too.

Instead of putting a washed-out LCD on top of the HomePod, Apple reintroduces the Scroll Wheel from the 2001 iPod for physical playback controls.
Apple unveils the PowerPad G4.
Skipping the M3, the tablet line transitions from Apple Silicon to the PowerPC architecture, bringing with it the same desktop-class performance as seen on the PowerMac G4 series.

Hot on the heels of the new iPads, Apple announces the Magic Keyboard Pro.
Following customer feedback, Magic Keyboard Pro adds modern I/O such as mini-DVI, a 56k modem, FireWire 400, and an 8X SuperDrive to the iPad Pro.

My favourite retro everyday carry has to be the 4th generation iPod, it's been modified with 256GB solid state storage, month-long battery, and a Taptic Engine. Anyone else still daily an iPod or retro tech in general?
Show me your daily retro tech!
Pro tip: If the Steam Deck is too heavy for you to lift, you can stream PC games to the Cover Screen of a Z Flip and play games like the Witcher, complete with touch controls!
Totally not cursed gaming at all.
Finished cleaning and upgrading the 2005 17" PowerBook, it's a really sleek machine even in today's standards. So long as I don't try to connect to modern web pages, it can still be used for basic everyday tasks like word processing and light image editing.
(bonus iPod cameo)

Aqua. Google Earth. FireWire. AirDrop. Long ago, the four technologies lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the FireWire nation attacked.
I brought an actual iPod Nano to the store to test their claim about the new

being thinner. Visually they're about the same, the difference is imperceptible to the naked eye.
Oh wow, Internet Explorer 5 for Mac still partially works.
And by "partially", I mean "I can search stuff up on Google but can't open any of the results because the security on this thing is outdated as heck".

iPods are pretty much just dumbed-down Apple Watches in terms of functionality, they don't need an A-series chip when the S-series chip does everything an iPod needs to do with better power efficiency too. S5 because it's the first to support AOD.
Managed to fix up a PowerPC machine for the first time! The aesthetic design of this PowerBook G4 is surprisingly modern and it's hard to tell this computer was made in the early 2000s.

Managed to find a later generation 17" PowerBook G4 with upgraded screen. Compared to the older one on the left, the upgraded model can show so much more content and looks way sharper too. For 2005 standards, it's pretty incredible.
I may or may not have been inspired by some people to pick up and restore a 17" PowerBook. These things are pretty amazing, even for today's standards.
In case anyone's wondering, the Galaxy Z Flip can read floppy disks over USB.
(other Android OTG-compatible devices I tested could power the drive but not mount or otherwise interact with the volume)
Introducing the all-new PowerVision G4, a revolutionary PowerPC G4-based spatial computer running the latest desktop-class operating system, OS X 10.4 Tiger. We think you're gonna love it.

Tried some product photography-style shots with the Deckintosh G3.
For those wondering, I made it by combining parts from ExtremeRate's translucent white and "emerald green" (looks more blue in person) Deck shell sets. Only time will tell how well durability fares.

In mid-2004, Apple experimented with a low-cost iPod that lacked any direct playback controls. A Click Wheel attachment was supposed to be sold as a separate accessory for $49.99.

In an alternate timeline, Apple made the new capacitive button on the iPhone 16 Pro act as a secondary Dynamic Island for when the main screen is off.

They've been claiming it's caused by iOS-side updates since February, but strangely other apps can control connected speakers with the volume buttons with no problem.
Did you know? Apple tested a smaller form factor iPhone as early as 2007. The iPhone Shuffle had no screen and charged through the 3.5mm port. Unfortunately it was abandoned during early testing stages.

Funny thing is, Taptic vibrations are really just audio wave files so technically I could replace the Taptic Engine in a phone with a Bluetooth transmitter and then link up a separate Taptic Engine with a Bluetooth receiver and battery and make it wireless.

Instructions unclear: Accidentally installed visionOS on it and now it won't work without an external battery pack constantly tethered to it.
Samsung once experimented with a 4-segmented foldable phone instead of 2 segments, and it would have folded up like the shape of the letter W. Dubbed the Galaxy W Flip, the prototype was abandoned because the branding sounded less catchy than "Z Flip".

Following feedback about the poor durability of the titanium PowerBook, Steve Jobs unveiled the all-new lead alloy PowerBook G4.
Reviewers praised the PbBook for the premium-feeling weight and durability that often outlasted the lifespan of their owners.
