Super proud of my daughter. 5th generation in mining, a graduate mining engineer with Anglo, has been grinding it all year getting face-time experience at Kloof of all places - one of the deepest gold mines in the world. Its been super tough 4 her but she is hanging in there.❤️

Imagine you have project and hire a truly great geologist who has drilled some fantastic looking sections based on a small surface anomaly he found from a surface geochem sampling program.
Super proud of my daughter embarking on her 3yr mining engineering graduate development program with a large, multinational Co. Following in the footsteps of her dad, grandfather, great-grandfather and great, great grandfather.
Mining in the blood.❤️
Too good not to repost: The world's biggest open pit blast. Iron Ore. Australia. 11 million tonnes 6,410 blast holes, each with its own detonator, 51 Hectares. A couple of blown out shots in the middle that will make things difficult for the diggers. 😃

Blasting the right way: A great oldie. The part which flashes is called the pre-split, the holes are not stemmed and blasted together, blowing out dust, but creating a nice, clean "split" in the highwall which is easy to dress, very safe & best geotech practice in OP blasting.

Who Owns What graphic. Still worth sharing even though its a couple of yrs old now. I had to stitch 4 images together to get this right; hopefully everything is legible.
A pre-split is a row blasted all together at the back of a blast before the main sequence starts. The holes are lightly charged & left open (no stemming) so that the reduced force creates a split/crack preventing the force of the main blast from subsequently damaging the high wall
A sight no miner wants to see. 50 x 250t off-highway trucks parked up at Las Bambas in Peru. Millions of $ local economic generation capacity wasted because of a few greedy people and a weak government, paralyzed by fear. The biggest risk to every mining Company worldwide.

with Electric machines: A modern miracle to save the environment or a pipe dream? 🧵
I'll discuss both open pit & underground apps.
For 60yrs, engineers have been innovating electric mining machines b/c they're cheaper. An electric dragline moves 60t each swing.😳1/
Its pretty cool when you drill 20m of high grade copper in a zinc mine - This happened to us yesterday. Looks like we might have found the heat source and possibly something very big. Being private is cool b/c announcing something like this can't be blamed as pumping the SP. Will
Winter + Mining = Most Expensive Christmas Tree Ever! 😆
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas & may your new year be filled with interesting posts about Mining & Mining Co's, what to do and whatnot to do. 😉💪
These kind of pit slope failure tragedies are totally avoidable with even a basic amount of slope monitoring. You can't stop something like this from happening but with regular measurement at the same time each day you can predict them more very precisely to within hours & evac.
Here is an gold open pit I designed some yrs ago in Ghana. We intentionally changed the pit limit to save that big tree in the background, even though it left behind economic ore. It might not look so big but it was over 3.5m in diameter one of the few giants still left.
Our team are replacing these 24 inch pipes with a new 48 inch column so have come up with this ingenious method of floating out the old ones through the 4km mine drainage tunnel.😂 Mining is such fun.😃
Block Caving. The lowest cost, highest production mining method. Only works for large orebodies. Rule of 👍 cost &$16-25/t. Takes a while (years) to get to full production. This is Chuquicamata's block cave layout to produce 140,000 tonnes per day. 😃
Graduate Mining Engineers: There is a skill to mining through bad ground; desktop blotter jotters will never know. You only learn stuff like this by DOING it yourself underground, so DONT SKIMP in your first 5 yrs on the job. Spend time UG, it will save your job later as a GM/COO
Bet a lot of you have not heard about metal accounting👇 in mining, but its real and its a very important thing to look at when evaluating any project.

Here is a pretty cool video showing TROLLEY ASSIST; developed on one of the lowest grade open pit copper mines in the world (Palaborwa, RSA) the system has been in use in open pit mines for more than 40yrs. Works well if your pit ramp is fixed for >4yrs.
Water, the underground miner´s enemy & a BIG challenge. This is a development heading we are currently mining. Trying to anyway.😆 When you place explosives in the holes they just gets pushed out again. Luckily not too much pressure here, yet.
Working in the mining industry is actually a lot of fun. Everyday is different and brings new challenges. It also pays really well, especially if you have half a clue as to what you are doing. You'd be surprised how many folks don't. 😏
Here is a very nice video of a rail-bound pneumatic loader in operation, loading a 1.5t rail car. Actually a very cost-effective method of cleaning development albeit a little slower than trackless. No tyres, no diesel, no mechanics. VERY little downtime.
A rare moment of quiet & rest at a sinking shaft. 😃You wouldn't normally have this much space, but this is a during a shaft station breakaway. Notice the cactus grab in temp storage below the stage.
It really nice when you find a 17% copper sample inside an operating zinc mine. 🙂 No long lead times to development, just a frantic session of mine development, infill drilling, met. test work, ordering of reagents. Will let you know how things go later this month.
Exploration drilling is important to replace what is mined. How much did the Co you invest in drill last year? We averaged 30,000m/yr over 5yrs & have been able to replace + extend Life of Mine to 10+yrs, mining 800ktpy. Here is what 1,358,818m of drilling over 74yrs looks like😱
Despite a huge commodity rebound, Mr. Market over the last 2-3yrs has finally has realized most JnrMinCo's are not worth the paper printed. No one is buying. The glory days of pump stocks, Stan Barthi's et al are apparently over, along with any genuine mine maker's ability to
1/18 MINING COST ASSUMPTIONS r subjective & r based on many variables, e.g:

My great grandfather started out on the Welsh coal mines at age 10. Grandad on dad's side was a exploration driller. Grandad on mom's side was a mine capt. Dad has 50yrs in geology & building mines, I got 27yrs as Bsc. Eng Mining & my daughter finishes B. Eng. mining next month😃

This is a big deal: MMG put Las Bambas on Care & Maintenance effective 1st Feb. This mine produces 290kt copper/yr, effectively 1.3% of the global production.

Mining Pushbacks 101: A great way to delay stripping (capital) costs for better cashflow over an open pit life of mine. Its better to have an additional ramp on the right hand highwall in this pic below to access the bottom; waste stripping is accessed by its own separate ramp.

looks like this. It's quite hard work & if the ground conditions are bad it can take a whole shift to complete. Normally though, it takes 15 minutes to an hour.
These machines work well in any kind of soft rock. In the first shot, note the excessive use of stone dust (white on walls) to minimize risk from coal dust explosions.
This type of "in-stope" escalator was widely used in the Cornish tin mines 100yrs ago for transporting men & material in conjunction with a steam-powered drive system up 18 foot vertical steps.
See video for how it works. 😬😅 Hairy, but effective.
A little bit embarrassing but today I just sold the last shares I had in Sandstorm. Awful, awful stock. Here is a not very proud list of my closed positions. Still 63% (I believe) is a little bit higher than the banks. 🤣🙄 I will circulate a list of open positions I have soon.
