Until the contemporary composition of commercial & recreational hammerhead catches can be verified, we recommend that both State and Federal governments strengthen the protection of the species, especially at their aggregation sites.

The species is currently listed as Conservation Dependent in Australia under the #EPBCAct , although its conservation status is currently under review.

The presence of this aggregation so far south appears to be a relatively recent phenomenon, might indicate a poleward shift in distribution as a result of ocean warming and exposes the animals to greater fishing pressure.

The aggregation was reliably seen during January and February, and the average length of the sharks was approx 1.5m (sexually immature juveniles).
