Esther, who sent the postcard from Salamanca, Spain was studying abroad in 2002. From the letter, we gather Esther enjoyed meeting new people from NU but lamented the lack of other Black students & struggled with the feeling of being objectified. @NUBlackAlumni #ArchivesPostcard

Happy Festivus! December 23 marks the celebration of perhaps America's most beloved fictional holiday, introduced in Seinfeld's episode "The Strike." This season would see Northwestern alum Julia Louis-Dreyfus (pictured) nominated for an Emmy for the seventh consecutive time.

Northwestern's men's basketball team will renew a 107-year-old rivalry tonight on the Near South Side when it takes on DePaul. The Wildcats first encountered the Blue Demons on the hardwood February 21, 1912 in Evanston, cruising to a 34-17 win (game recap pictured).

Happy #NationalViolinDay! The most celebrated of the string instruments has long played an integral role in music at Northwestern. The Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra made its debut at Harris Hall December 6, 1939 (pictured).

#OTD in 1941, President Franklyn Bliss Snyder (pictured) addressed the student body regarding the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor three days prior. Snyder projected a calm demeanor and expressed confidence in an Allied victory in World War II.

Northwestern's bowl history, though comparatively small, has been well-traveled. In 15 bowl games since their postseason debut in the 1949 Rose Bowl (pictured), the Wildcats have played 14 opponents from five conferences in six states.

Today marks 78 years since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, bringing about America's entry into World War II. Harold "Hal" Christopher, a 1941 graduate of Northwestern, was killed in the attack (pictured); a ship was later named in his honor.

#OTD in 1890, the University Board of Trustees officially approved the design seen on Northwestern's seal to this day. Daniel Bonbright, a 35-year Latin professor, was responsible for final design, including the incorporation of the school motto, "Quaecumque sunt vera."
