Check out @NOAAClimate's latest Polar Vortex Blog! Though parts of the U.S. have been very cold and snowy, experts do not think there's much evidence that the #polarvortex is the main driver of our #winter #weather so far this year. πŸ”—: https://t.co/UbfoxNOCF4

After a near record warmth day… Temperatures cool along with chances of scattered rain and snow showers to the region tonight/Tuesday morning. Even a glaze of ice for localized areas cannot be ruled out at this time. #miwx

Strong winds will continue area-wide today with gusts up to 45 mph (locally up to 50 mph possible). The winds in combination with dry conditions will also make for an elevated brush fire risk for areas along and north of I-80. #ILwx #INwx

With the ongoing cold, many ponds and lakes may have become ice-covered. That doesn't mean it's safe to walk on! Long-periods of extended cold are necessary to create ice thick enough (4+ inches) to support activity. If you don't know, don't go!
