DC Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton’s strong history of civil rights and public service deserves a better end than this. Her inability to function at yesterday’s Hill committee on DC was her public “Joe Biden Debate” moment. A decision to retire honorably should be next.

So let me get this straight … it’s not ok to use race as a factor in college applications and jobs, but it is ok to use race as a justification to arrest people? I’m just trying to figure it out.

The irony/idiocy of this banner screaming "American Workers First" is that Trump has forced more than 199,000 federal workers out of their jobs since Jan. Nearly 1 in 10 federal workers gone.

Watching this congressional debate for my home district makes me miss @JacksonLeeTX18. That lady ain’t got no business being dead.

Today a bunch of us repeatedly asked Bowser and Chief Smith about how federal agents might be damaging the trust residents might have with MPD, and both somewhat avoided getting too deep into the issue.

The obvious risk to how she’s approaching this is residents could see her as excusing how federal agents are operating. Bowser has criticized ICE agents for wearing masks, and hinted that immigration enforcement shouldn’t be a priority. But there hasn’t been much more than that.

In a statement responding to @MayorBowser’s comments today on the ongoing presence of federal agents in the city, @freedcproject_ says: “D.C. needs these federal forces out immediately. Every hour that they are still here is an hour that people in D.C. are in danger.”

The National Guard is basically the optics, the thing that gets on TV. But they’re not really doing any real law enforcement. (Which is probably good, since they aren’t trained for it.)

I don’t know that it’s less visible anymore, but I do think the National Guard is currently less consequential than the federal law enforcement agents active around D.C. That’s where the aggressive tactics and arrests are coming from, not to mention immigration enforcement.

Unless I’m missing anything, not sure if people quite understand/media hasn’t really explained well that the 30 day limit for the MPD Federal co-opt doesn’t really impact the Fed law enforcement/ICE surge or the National Guard presence. It can really go on indefinitely

This is true. I listened to Bowser’s statements again, and she was basically accepting the reality that Trump can keep federal agents in the city for as long as he wants. She wants more local control of them, and more coordination with MPD.

National Guard troops deployed in D.C. will pick up trash and work on dozens of “beautification and restoration” projects, officials said. “It feels good to be out here cleaning streets, making D.C. beautiful again," a member and Southeast native said.

Are these people fully for real?
