ME and RI are the only NEPARC states without venomous snakes, although there were likely some historical pre-colonial populations there.

YOU. SHALL. NOT. PASS. This cottonmouth at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia would like to remind you that at a national wildlife refuge, sneks have the right of way. Photo courtesy of Kristopher Boldizar.

Happy #WorldSnakeDay! Did you know that the NEPARC region has 4 venomous snakes? The copperhead and timber rattlesnake are widespread, found from New England down thru VA. The cottonmouth is found in SE VA and the E. massasauga in isolated pops in PA and NY.

This #WoodTurtle has a classic case of what we call “slug face”. Slugs and other snails are a big part of the Wood Turtle’s diet, but they produce a defensive goo that sticks to the turtle’s mouth for hours, sometimes longer.

Happy #4thofjuly ! Salamanders feel pretty American to us, as the US has incredible sal diversity, containing about 1/3 of the world’s sal species. Appalachia alone has about half of those. It’s just another part of our country’s natural world to protect and be proud of!
