Since 1947, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has been dedicated to the conservation and sustainability of the state’s fish and wildlife resources.
Last week I was walking to an interview and came upon a turtle trying to cross the road. I picked it up and safely put it down on the other side in the direction it was headed. I got to the office and the interviewer walked in.
It was the turtle.
Ya never know, folks!
The green area is where alligators can be found in North Carolina.
In other words...the further you go into the green area, the higher probability of one seeing you later.
If North Carolina gets an

team/mascot, what should it be called?
We vote for the Carolina Copperheads, but to keep it real to the state, make the uniforms look like some other snake.

I love how you've gotten to the point that you can take time away from wildlife stuff to workshop your Mitch Hedberg-esque standup routine. This is the dream.
Great news for sea turtles!
More than 90 green sea turtle nests were laid in North Carolina this season, the most we've ever seen. The previous record was 62 nests in 2019.
To put this in perspective: Twenty years ago, it was a exciting to see 10-15 nests in a single season.
Not only is it illegal to have a pet alligator in North Carolina, it's also dangerous.
You could try and teach it to play fetch, but you'd probably throw the ball and it would come back with the neighbor's dog.
Regarding The Twelve Days of Christmas...
If someone keeps unloading birds on you and calling them gifts, they are probably not your "true love" and a restraining order might be the best present you get that year.
Over the weekend, we asked a guy who was fishing without a license if he had a police record.
He said no, but he does have some of Sting's solo albums.
Happy Monday.
For the second year in a row, agency biologists are asking for help tracking chipmunks east of I-95 in N.C. If you see one, please:
- Take a photo
- Note the location (GPS coordinates are preferred)

The Eastern milksnake is one of many snakes in North Carolina that don't give birth to live young (unlike copperheads).

My milksnake brings all the eggs to the yard.
(I'm sorry. It had to be done.)

SO IT'S LIKE RED TOUCHING YELLOW, KILL A FELLOW BUT RED TOUCHING BLACK, FRIEND OF JACK BUT FOR REAL JUST LEAVE SNAKES ALONE THEY'RE JUST OUT THERE DOING TRYNA DO THEIR SNAKE STUFF.
Don't feed Crocs to gators.
In fact, don't feed them anything. It causes them to associate humans with an easy meal, which could lead to dangerous situations. Plus, it's against the law.
So...okay?

After 20 years of living only in captivity, the federally endangered Magnificent Ramshorn has been returned to the wild. On Nov. 16, the NCWRC reintroduced 2,000 of these aquatic snails into a pond on NCWRC Game Lands in Brunswick County.

If you're ever in a position to safely help a turtle on the road, be sure to pick it up by the back of the shell with two hands, placing it well away from the road in the direction it was traveling.

STRANGER: Aren't you the guy that always talks about weird wildlife stuff?
ME: No, but are you aware that otters are born not knowing how to swim and have to be taught by their mothers?
Ever seen a flock of birds flying in that "V" formation and wondered why one side was longer than the other?
Science tells us that the longer side has more birds on it.
If people keep telling you, "but you're a catch!?"
...know that you are a valuable, endangered species and that's probably why you keep getting thrown back into the ocean.
First date idea:
I take you to a nice restaurant, you order whatever you like while I sit there and talk about every big fish I've ever caught. Then when dinner is over, you stand up and clap.
If you observe an armadillo in the wild, please participate in the NC Armadillo () project by uploading and sharing your photos or download the iNaturalist app, available for iPhone and Android.
This is an extraordinary photo of an elk, a copperhead, a rabbit, a brook trout and a wildlife officer all in the same place. It's a shame Twitter isn't working and you can't see it.
Seeing foxes around your neighborhood, even during the day? If so, it is likely because kit-rearing season is upon us. Young foxes are maturing and spending more time outside of the den, making sightings of them and adult foxes more likely. Learn more:
Facebook and IG went down today, which could be what happens when someone tries to domesticate a wild animal and keep it as a pet.
So maybe don't do that and we'll all still be able to see pictures of your birthday party or whatever.
- Pull over safely.
- Move the turtle in the direction it was headed.
- Pick it up by the back of the shell with two hands.
- Watch out for the claws and bitey parts.
- Pat yourself on the back for being a friend of turtles.
- Have a cupcake or something. You earned it.
Wild parents can’t hire a babysitter and it is normal for many species to leave their young unattended for long periods. Never assume young wildlife has been abandoned or orphaned just because you don’t see a parent nearby.

reminds beach-goers to keep beaches clean and shield lights at night for nesting sea turtles.
