A large scandal in the HPC community revealed that drinking water from the Thames was being used to cool data centres, wasting a valuable resource ⬇️

Sustainability problems in HPC include:. -Energy-intensive running & cooling costs.-Inefficient code.-Life-expired HPC waste.-Poor consolidation to higher-tier HPCs.-Chemicals & materials used. A common attitude is obtaining the highest specs regardless of environmental cost.

@women_in_hpc As a team leader, it is important to acknowledge problems and bias. It may be that we can do little, but it’s better than nothing. Being aware of problems, like women asking for promotions less than men, means you can support those team members and build a value-led culture.

@N8CIR are incredibly committed to #equality and #diversity in #HPC. We have a @women_in_hpc chapter and have developed a diversity checklist for recruitment to remove bias, which is now used all over the world ⬇️

Examples of broken trust include deadlines being missed, lack of documentation, and lack of ownership of responsibilities.

Building trust on a with your team on a workflow level means each person fulfilling their responsibilities in the manner they said they would, and open and timely communication about challenges.

Make sure the language used in recruitment reflects your organisation’s values. In interviews, make sure you include a diverse range of people including external, and include questions on diversity and culture.
