Next time I have occasion to name a bunch of network stuff, I'm going with Dunes. Not the book, just famous dunes. GreatSands, SleepingBear, WhiteSands, etc. It's free network monitoring, since if anyone gets into the network the groan when they realize it will be a good alert.

I feel like a real LLM programmer now. I wrote code that will give me Json that fits a specific schema. By removing everything until it is a bare {}.

What I find funny about about all the LLM stuff I work with, especially in relation to code generation, is how it represents everything that is *terrible* about working with software development. How does no LLM stack work in a way that isn't "works on my machine?".

I mean, I almost certainly had a conversation pretty similar to this when I was a teenager 20 years ago pirating video games and couldn't figure out how to open a .rar, except I probably downloaded something off a sketchy ad filled freeware site and didn't think twice.

I keep seeing this take (and others like it), but. I don't hate this response. * Knows random .exes can be bad.* Checks the built in package manager for an option rather than run it. I would rather they look up what a .7z is, but outside of that. .

I can't make much of a value judgement, but I have musician friends who would have told you they would rather starve than sell licenses for an educational video 20 years ago, but today that background music is all that stands between us and losing music.

All of it was seen as entirely soulless and beneath them, and insulting to even suggest. Now, though, the current generation of young artists is trying to protect that exact same type of artwork from AI.

The worst thing they could imagine was to go get a job where they just churned out artwork or music to be in the background of something. I actually had a major falling out with a photographer because I said their work was good enough they could sell it to a stock photo site.

Since we're doing some AI art discourse, I find it fascinating the way "art" has been redefined in the past 20 years. Back in high school/college I hung with a lot of artists/musicians, and they swore up and down they would *never* "sell out".

It would take a decade as a 99th percentile reader to get through the back catalog for just those authors. If you can't walk in a book store and find something that looks interesting in the first 5 minutes, that's a skill issue.

This is a braindead "gender war" take. I count 10 unambiguous "male" NYT #1 bestsellers for 2023, not counting ones like the Galbraith book, or the Patterson and Sanford books with women main characters. You could be 10% of US readers only reading brand new bestsellers for men.

Walk into any bookstore in America. Indie, chain, doesn’t matter. Take a picture of the displays at the front. Then report back to me and see if you can figure out the answer to this question.

The crowdstrike stuff is apparently to the point other brands are actively using it for advertising.

Had a weird experience on the road this morning. I drove past a little old lady driving a prius, and on the back were:. * A "New Driver" sticker.* A Minions Decal.* And a decal that looked exactly like Binary Ninja mascot, but I don't think they ever made those. .

Read a post on the twitch streamer drama, and now a full 1/3 of the stuff on the "For You" is related to either the drama I read or related drama.

Feels like another change to the twitter algorithm got pushed this week, and I don't think I like it. Feels *super* sensitive to you reading a post outside your normal. Read a thread on indie book recommendations, now apparently I'm getting pushed all sorts of indie author stuff.

Like, if you face swapped this to someone random and told me it was the headliner at a 30 seat local club, I don't know if I could tell the difference.

This is actually just about ready to use as a product. Put a good laugh track over it and we're close to infinitely productive c-teir standup comedy.

Humor is a sign of intelligence, so I asked Claude-Sonnet-3.5 to absolutely COOK GPT-4o. Then I put the results into a @DaveChappelle deepfake. The result is damn jarring. See for yourself:

What do you think the odds are that the midi device programming api has some juicy attack surface?.

No thanks, I'm good. I don't want Alibaba to control and reprogram my MIDI devices.

I can never tell when people are really committed to this bit if they actually believe it or if it's some sort of imposter syndrome projection thing.

I was recruiting an engineer today and I told him…. “We only tolerate A+ players. We fire quickly so you’ll never be surrounded by B players.”. Him:. “Thank God I love that.”. The best people only want to work with the best.

More than once I've gotten a call to help with landing something only to find they have an arbitrary write powered by nothing but vibes and 200 lines of uncommented python they can explain precisely 3 of. .
