So very sorry to hear about Helen’s passing. After the tragic loss of Garry, she transformed her own pain into a lifelong mission to seek justice and change - championing the rights of victims with an unshakable sense of purpose. Thoughts are with Paul, Zoe, Danielle and Amy

Desperately sad to hear that Helen Newlove has died. Helen was so wonderful, warm, brave and plain speaking. She suffered the tragedy of watching her beloved husband, Garry, being murdered by thugs - and then turned that experience into a second life of service. Service to her

90% of all criminal cases dealt with by lay magistrates- some very sensible recommendations from the @magistrates Association that would help to make magistrates feel more valued within the justice system.

Hot off the press for #VolunteersWeek2025: our new #advocacy report reveals that despite being vital to the justice system, #magistrates – who are all unpaid #volunteers – don’t receive the support and recognition they deserve, and this is becoming a resigning matter for some.

Not an unfamiliar experience in Magistrates Courts. There are simple steps that could be taken to address failure to attend court, reduce adjournments, reduce time spent on warrants by police and to get more on the day reports from probation.

Aside to the concerns of the MoD - surely we should be focused on UK resilience and #growth by backing the many UK based suppliers to support jobs here - with a longer view to exporting our technology around the world?

Huge setback for Merseyside and the North West and totally at odds with the Government’s drive for growth. It’s all very well saying the ‘mission is growth’, the evidence appears to show that when it comes to delivery it’s just words!

Huge impact of overnight torrential rain in Cheshire with #Bridgewater Canal collapse where it crosses the River Bollin near Little Bollington. Massive volumes of water lost from the canal into surrounding land - happened once before in 1971

Excellent thread - most of the narrative of the last few months seems to have totally forgotten the impact the pandemic had on our public finances.

One of the weirdest aspects of the Budget, and much of the commentary since, has been how little the pandemic even gets mentioned. The country spent somewhere between £310bn and £410bn on its response, according to the @commonslibrary

Worth saying the rules are there to ensure there is transparency in terms of influence in politics. The rules don’t prohibit politicians from accepting gifts they are there to make it clear who’s donated what and when.

Im sure I’m not alone asking why the PM felt it was necessary to accept gifts of clothes and glasses totalling £20,000 - how many grey suits does he need - and what does that really say about Sir Kier’s commitment to this being a Government of Service and the integrity promised.

The rectification process was used by the Standards Commissioner in 2022 after Sir Kier failed to register eight interests. Repeated breeches are likely to be treated more seriously. These rules are the personal responsibility of the MP, regardless of their role in Govt.
