This morning, the Ministry observed a moment of silence in memory of our colleague Ms. Lujaina Thasneema, who passed away in Japan while pursuing her Master’s degree. The observance was followed by heartfelt remarks from one of her closest colleagues and former supervisor.

In 1978, the education system was unified, and primary schools were built across atolls with expertise and funding from UNESCO, UNICEF and UNDP. A nationwide literacy program followed in 1980, which led to an impressive 98% literacy rate by the end of the decade. #MDVUN60

The Maldives joined the United Nations on 21 September 1965 - less than 2 months after regaining independence. The Maldives was the 116th member of the UN - and at that time, among its smallest members. @UNMaldives
