Our research shows a sharp rise in fossil fuel industry lobbying and campaign contributions as the cap-and-trade debate gained momentum. A positive correlation between FFI money and contrarian witnesses suggests industry funding may have boosted their access. #ClimatePolicy

Our research found that climate contrarians were given widespread access to testify, misrepresenting the scientific consensus. They made up 27% of scientific testimonies, and in key committees, nearly 36%, allowing them to disproportionately influence climate policy hearings.

The 110th & 111th Congress had a unique opportunity to pass climate legislation, with public support, industry backing, and Democratic control. Yet no policy passed. We analysed expert witness testimonies from 117 climate hearings (2003-2010) to understand why.

Since March 2021, I have been adapting this machine learning model in the artistic project titled Critical Climate Machine, supported by the European consortium @MediaFuturesEU and @HorizonEU. The resulting artwork now classifies misinformation found on Twitter – in real-time.
