Christian Porter has discontinued his case. The ABC will pay him no damages. I stand by my journalism & proud to work
@4corners
& grateful to the ABC & our brilliant legal team for supporting public interest journalism. Thanks, everyone, for your support.
Yet again, high profile men go after woman who, after surviving appalling trauma, goes on to become Australian of the Year, works tirelessly to educate the community about said crime, but has the temerity not to conform to the men’s expectation of how such a woman should behave.
I am overwhelmed by the decency of so many of you. I can’t possibly keep up with all the messages on all the platforms, but please know I see each one and I am so buoyed and grateful and inspired by the overwhelming evidence that kindness and commitment to the truth prevails.
I’ve been inundated w messages offering to raise legal fees. Thanks so kindly but I’m indemnified by my employer. All I hope is you watch & read my journalism & all women journalists’ work on problems for complainants of sex crimes & harassment in courts, in politics, everywhere.
Today I observed Melb
#WomensMarch4Justice
- a sea of people who want better for every woman & girl. Then came home to my little girl, who unprompted said at school they were asked to nominate a woman they admired, who stood up for other women. My little lady chose her Mum. ❤️
To the 2021 old boy of Redfield College from a prominent family who threatened my safety on social media ahead of our investigation into his alma ahead of tonight’s 4 Corners, police are investigating. You cannot threaten women. Enough. I trust the school will assist

Gosh this is an absolutely stunning picture of Yolngu woman Magnolia Maymuru and her little one, Djarrarana, on the cover of

The other thing I can’t shake about this whole secret government business is it was Christian Porter who advised Morrison it was legal. The same man who refused to inform parliament who paid him huge sums of money for his legal fund to sue a public broadcaster (& me).
Never had a dog - didn’t grow up with them. But my husband & kids risked surprising me with this little guy today. We pick him up next month so my son named him August, Augie for short. I picked him up, he snuggled into me & I just burst into tears. Welcome to the family, Augie.
No-one commissions snarky profiles of male investigative journalists. No-one cites “activism” when men relentlessly, admirably pursue stories on war/casinos/finance. No-one explores their irrelevant childhood/calls their old school. Male investigative reporters aren’t the story.

It’s surprising when journalists (or news presenters) seem to think an anti-corruption commission is a pesky irritation ruining everything. Or calling for enforcement of parliamentary disclosure rules - preventing corruption/bought favours - is mob rule.
@barriecassidy
spot on.
I never met Kate, but I have read many, many pages of her correspondence and spoken to dozens of people who knew and loved her. I feel confident that she would have been very moved and gratified to see that

We are still absolutely committed to the 27 redacted pages being in the public domain. I am sure our colleagues in the media are too. We stand by the truth and the excellent witnesses who came forward and were prepared to put themselves on the line.
No, Andrew Bolt, I do not apologise. Your support of a man who a 5-year Royal Commission found knew about insatiable paedophile clergy & did absolutely nothing, a man now swanning about Rome like whole thing was a bad dream, is sickening. Your lack of empathy for victims is vile.
Last time I spent this long in Canberra was for the spill against
@TurnbullMalcolm
. I left feeling I needed a shower after toxic goings on. This time, it was so different - parliamentary corridors full of women, more diverse, a sense of hope & optimism. Hopefully it will last.
Last word: Today the room feels filled with a woman who I never met, a woman I missed by a day. A woman whose presence was etched out in the many, many letters of hers I read. A smart and complicated woman with very loyal friends. A woman who tried really, really hard.
Woman next to me on plane with delightful baby on her lap. Passenger in front insists on reclining her seat (on 90 minute flight 🙄). The mum very politely, sweetly asks passenger in front to put seat forward, as it’s squashing baby. Passenger refuses. What’s wrong with people?
This offensive garbage was sent to federal parliamentarians. Please let me know, MPs/Senators, if you have received same.
1. I’ve never had an abortion.
2. It no one’s business if I had.
3. I’m not writing a book about abortion.
4. Whoever did this is truly vile. 😞
Genuine question: Given drastic shortage of workers in many industries, concerns about supply chains, etc, why not allow the refugees detained in hotels for years on end to live in the community and work?
A reminder: The child abuse Royal Commission heard survivors of child abuse often turned to substances: heroin to dull pain, alcohol/dope to make them forget. I’ve met 100s of survivors & so many said this. They were victims of crime when they should have been enjoying childhood.

Clarification: NSW police didn’t “end” their investigation. The investigation never began. Complainant never made statement. When I inquired, they were very interested to know if I knew of other complainants against
#CabinetMinister
. My answer: “Not in your jurisdiction”.
Thank you to everyone who has sent kind messages over the past few months. And to everyone who believes in truth, decency and accountability. And let’s not forget that underneath all that has transpired, whatever way you look at it, lies great sadness.
How is the fact a complainant of a sexual crime was wearing a long tan dress & a “nude heel” relevant to a court report? The accused walked into court but there’s no description of his attire. We should stop gratuitous references to women’s appearance unless we do same with men.
On the former Attorney’s attempt to restrict public access to our full defence: “The ABC supports having all materials in these proceedings, which are in the public interest, open to public scrutiny.”

Our kids are going to look back, disgusted, and say “how can you have done this to us? What was wrong with you people? Dithering and arguing for decades despite what you knew and then all of a sudden you realise it’s a hot mess?”

For all of you so moved by the plight of Kaila Jobson in our
@4corners
story, No Place To Call Home, last week, I have some wonderful news. Kaila’s been offered a place. The little ones will each have their own bedroom. She’s crying tears of joy. Thanks, Australia, for caring. ❤️
Going to duck out & get back to life & job for a while. Thanks again for the lovely messages, excellent people. As to the after-dark-emboldened rump who say I’m a “fucking whore”, or write me off as an “idiot”, you know you’re meant to be convincing me I’m the bad one, right? 👀
21 yrs ago, I proudly started work at the national broadsheet. I loved it. They praised my work. They were friends & colleagues. I left on good terms to work in TV. Fmr Editor-in-Chief David Armstrong gave me my start. A kind & wise man. Shared with his permission & my gratitude.
In April 2020, during COVID lockdown, I had a man - a Pell defender - who had been repeatedly threatening me. He was eventually charged and convicted. The very decent young officer from
#NSWPolice
spent many hours taking my entire statement by phone.
I held on to

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a year where the response to women speaking up for themselves & other women has been so resoundingly: 🤐. Shut them up. By contrast, the response to men behaving badly is resoundingly: 🤷. Move on. Get over it. Then carnival duly moves on.
“This is an absolute affront and I am staggered Porter thought he could get away with it..If he does not know the identity of the donor, he should not accept the money..Everything about our political system depends on disclosure & accountability.”

: The ex-wife of Attorney-General Christian Porter was among thousands of West Australians to march across the Perth CBD in protest of gender discrimination and violence. 🔒
Thinking of all survivors of sexual crimes and how unbelievably triggered they must be right now. And how they should be loved and supported and understood and respected and heard.
Hats off to the lovely nurse who was cool as a cucumber and compassionate as the little boy ahead of my child completely freaked out about getting his COVID vaccination. He was clearly terrified but he finally got there. Nurses really are great humans.
My teenager is anxious about lockdown, afraid of COVID, has additional needs, but his resilience knows no bounds. I’m SO proud of him. Today he overcame, once again, needle phobia & is fully vaccinated. He shows more wisdom & maturity than many others much older than him.
Thinking of every survivor and every woman who marched for justice who is struggling with the latest news from the nation’s capital.

Me “perhaps” (perhaps, perhaps, perhaps) deleting tweets is brought to you by the same peeps that had me tailing the Commonwealth Attorney-General with private investigators. On the front page! Exclusive! With zero proof. Because, again, it didn’t happen. Happy Friday.
The unreconstructed misogyny that is permeating some of the commentary about this election is off the charts. It also completely ignores that women are 50 per cent of the population and are sick of being spoken to and about in this way. And they vote.
I’m

Will be fascinated to see if the many, many Coalition women - staffers and politicians - who have been privately expressing their frustration to me over the past year about sexism/sexual harassment/sexual crime in federal parliament will be attending the

today.
Never, ever under-estimate the ability of the old boys network to be just that. Old. Boys. Desperately clinging on to what they think is, and want to be, power, but is really just a bit sad and desperate.
I got sad news today about a very fine person. I was sitting in a cafe in Darwin, failing dismally in attempting not to cry. An absolutely lovely woman (a stranger) came & put her arms around me & the simple kindness of it took my breath away. Humans can be golden sometimes.
One thing I will say is it was ...surprising... during
@ScottMorrisonMP
’s press conference, when the actual woman in the equation was asked about the
@4corners
story last night on, you know, how tough it is for women in parliament, the PM jumped in and interrupted her.
THREAD: Two years ago, myself & Sally Neighbour were subjected to a vile attack by The Australian. Today a

Any suggestion I’m “at war”, least of all with ABC MD, with whom I have an excellent relationship, is completely untrue. I declined to speak to any journalist about this - in fact, I’ve been very unwell after operation. James Madden
@australian
didn’t give me courtesy of a call.
Flying home from my last

shoot of the year. Tired, losing my voice, but looking forward to bringing some compelling public interest journalism early in the new year. Thanks to all who have put themselves on the line for us this year. Happy holidays & stay tuned. ❤️🌲💪
There is something completely mind-bending about the juxtaposition of these new revelations about
@ScottMorrisonMP
’s secret government and his comments a few weeks ago to the Pentecostalist flock about how “we don’t trust in government”. (Or the UN).
Did I just hear Peter Dutton say on the wireless that strict application of border rules was having a negative impact on people’s mental health? I mean yes, it is, but, um...
There are fantastic people nominating to be staff-elected director of the ABC & hats off to all. For me,
@latingle
is the pick. Of course she’s whip-smart. She’s also unafraid, collaborative, incredibly decent & loyal, has strong ideas for the ABC’s future. She won’t let us down.
Prime Minister has just quoted me in parliament to prove Labor also has issues re toxic behaviour. True, but of dozens & dozens of calls we made to staff & politicians from all sides, vast majority of allegations, volunteered, not sought, were about Liberal & Nationals.
#auspol
I think this election, yet again, says fascinating things about the Australian electorate’s propensity to ignore concerted media campaigns from certain quarters. I remember a Premier years ago telling me the power was overstated. He was right. Yet again, it is.

Today would have been the 51st birthday of someone who was very brave until she couldn’t be brave any more. “Happy birthday” is not the phrase. But pausing to think of a woman who I came to know through her excellent friends, who miss her terribly.
In a cab on Harbour Bridge in rainy Sydney, & bowled over to have just been presented 2019 Press Freedom Medal. I dedicate it to J, a courageous man who stared down apex of power to achieve justice, to R, who didn’t make it, & to all the men who told me their truth.

is what saw Mr Joyce out of Nats’ leadership in 2018, not a consensual affair. He denies it. Ms Marriott wanted it resolved privately, but was outed by the party. Today’s tough for her.
I’ve been in acute physical pain & dependent on others for weeks. Saying so bc first, I so admire those of you who live this every day. We must do better by you. Second, want to thank every one of you who sent incredibly kind messages, who had no idea. It really kept me going.
The trolling, threats, culture warring I’ve seen, after reporting on Opus Dei-aligned (not Catholic Education office) schools in no way represent what I was taught at an ordinary Catholic school, an ordinary Catholic parish. I was taught decency, charity, social justice, love.
Can the men on this

So anyone who has raised money: Send it to a charity or service helping the victims of sexual assault or domestic violence - I know they do it tough and could do with all the help they can get.
The ignorance shown by some people about the impact of child abuse on the trajectory of a child’s life and how it affects adulthood is depressing. Imagine what it would do to you/your children to have a devastating trauma as a child which you struggled to scrub from your brain.
Honestly I hate to be a spoilsport but after a day of seeing RUOK stuff all over the place, given the state of things here and internationally, the answer to the question seems a fairly resounding “no”. And RUOK Day feels like the mental health equivalent of Earth Hour.
Year 11/12 teachers in Melb really worried about being forced back to work, unvaccinated, in poorly ventilated classrooms with 20+ young adults. Virus transmitted from “fleeting contact”. If they’re under 40, not eligible for Pfizer or AZ. Why aren’t they a priority?
