THREAD. Ok, folks. Sit back & strap in. Let's take a ride through history as we explore the US position on Taiwan's status, shall we? (Note: as inspiring as I may find @pptsapper's work, I've yet to have lunch, so this history will be entirely sober. Please accept my apologies.)

Told @FT that Chinese property mogul Zhang Xin showed "great foresight" in moving a lot of her money to the United States Because she understood early on that "America is a much safer place for billionaires than the People’s Republic of China" https://t.co/dFD6oiAIrN

In multiple statements on the violence, the Chinese foreign ministry has repeatedly declined to use the words “Hamas” or “terrorism.”
It’s becoming glaringly clear as to why an organization that spent months disrupting Congress over Gaza went radio silent over the slaughter of the Iranian people. I support @StateDept’s investigation of @codepink’s ties to the PRC.

Again, this is gross. Whatever you think of Eileen Gu, identifying “good” and “bad” Chinese-Americans will lead nowhere good.
A very interesting contrast between two American-born athletes at the Olympics. Freestyle Skier Eileen Gu (right), despite living her entire life in America, competes for China and gets paid millions of dollars to do it. Figure skater Alysa Liu (left), who just won a gold medal

This is correct and appropriate. But it is unfortunate that @UnderSecPD frames it this way. This is not the way to build consensus on tackling CCP political warfare.

As is this
@nypost Gu is a traitor and a sovereign prostitute. Her comments are par for the Chinese course.

I'm not sure calling these senators dupes is going to be a winning strategy for the @kuomintang.
Taiwan's opposition @kuomintang says @SenRubenGallego @SenDanSullivan @SenatorWicker were tricked into criticizing KMT obstruction of Pres @ChingteLai defense budget because of Lai's "sophisticated disinformation campaign" 🤔 https://t.co/CmMwgqI8g6

When I was living in Beijing, a girl in a bar asked me where I was from. "America." "Do you mean the United States?" "Yes." "You Americans. There are other countries in America, you know." And therein lies the root of my beef with the Swedes.
People love to whine whenever we call ourselves America but we are the only country with the word America in our name. You can call us the United States but you can also call us America. They are both on our long form birth certificate.

I met with FM Balakrishan to discuss the U.S.-Singapore relationship and our work on regional issues. This 60th anniversary of our bilateral ties marks a strong foundation – and an even stronger future for our partnership. - MGD

The sentencing of Jimmy Lai in Hong Kong is an unjust and tragic conclusion to this case. We urge the authorities to grant Mr. Lai humanitarian parole.
