Over two concentrated days, we worked with representatives of financial intelligence, police and prosecution authorities in North Macedonia on blockchain tracing tools, evidential use of blockchain data, and practical case studies on virtual asset–related investigations.

Earlier this week in Skopje, we concluded a @coe training on investigating and prosecuting money laundering and terrorist financing linked to virtual assets, under the Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye. 🇲🇰

We’re focusing on international and national regulatory frameworks for virtual assets, including FATF, MiCA, and the EU Travel Rule, as well as local legislation.

Travelling to Skopje today to conclude a @coe crypto law enforcement training programme with Richard Strike on Monday and Tuesday. Over the past few weeks, we’ve developed and delivered a series of workshops for law enforcement agencies in the Republic of North Macedonia.

It also implemented the core Law Commission recommendation that certain digital assets (notably crypto‑tokens and NFTs) should be capable of recognition as property via this new category, while leaving its boundaries to be developed by the courts, case by case.

In doing so, it removed the residual uncertainty left by case law alone and confirmed that digital assets can attract the full suite of proprietary remedies – including in fraud/theft, insolvency, security and trust contexts...

It gave explicit statutory footing to a “third category” of personal property, so that a digital or electronic thing is not denied proprietary status merely because it is neither a thing in possession nor a thing in action, across England and Wales (and Northern Ireland)...
