Canadian Jews: Antisemitism is on the rise, we are frightened for our safety and our future in this country. We need the government to step us and protect us and our community. Canadian Government: I know what to do! Tax-free Hanukkah Bushes! . 🤦‍♂️.

We need governments, universities and health care organizations to step up and protect Jewish health care workers. Not just because it is the right thing to do. But also because this is how we ensure that we have a healthcare system that protects and heals ALL Ontarians.

And so it is no surprise that nearly ONE THIRD of Jewish doctors have considered leaving Canada due to the sharp rise in antisemitism since 10/7/2023.

I am frightened for the future of my Jewish trainees. About the future of a health care system in which medical students learn that antisemitism is tolerated. In which Jewish MDs and students report that med school EDI programs do them more harm than good as Jews.

In the last year, 80% of Jewish doctors have been subject to antisemitism in their workplace. The highest rates of antisemitism were reported in the academic environment (i.e. teaching hospitals). Imagine what this means for our future doctors and their patients.

When I began medical school nearly 14 years ago, I felt safe and welcome as a Jew. In 2024, almost two thirds of Jewish medical learners have experienced antisemitism and 7 out of 10 are afraid about the impact of antisemitism on their careers.

Antisemitism is a crisis in Canada, and healthcare is no exception. In fact, at the Jewish Medical Association of Ontario, our survey has uncovered how deeply Canadian Jewish MDs are impacted. The results of JMAO's survey of Canadian Jewish doctors are chilling. Thread:

It is so important to hear the stories of 10/7 survivors like Amit. As he told me after watering the flowers that adorn his friends' memorial, "Time heals, but this time, I don't want it to heal. We need this pain to stay with us forever.". 6/6

This included and Adir and Shiraz Tamam, a beautiful couple who loved travel and music and peace. They were killed when Hamas terrorists threw a grenade into the roadside bomb shelter where they were hiding. They leave behind two little girls. 3/6.

Amit was at the Nova festival on Oct 7, dancing with childhood friends, when the attacks began. Through a series of miracles, he survived and saved some of his friends. But three of his best friends were murdered. 2/6.

I have had many profound moments visiting Israel this week. On July 7, the 9 month anniversary of Oct 7, I had the privilege to visit Southern Israel and the site of the Nova Musical Festival massacre with Amit Musaei. Amit is a brilliant tour guide and 10/7 survivor. 1/6

As proud Canadian Jews, this weekend filled our cups in so many ways. Yesterday, we saw 4 Israeli hostages rescued and brought home to their families. Today, we marched among 40,000+ friends, family and allies in one of the largest T.O. Jewish events ever. Am Yisrael Chai!
