I supervised a school lunchroom for 20+ years. It’s pretty simple: kids can’t learn on an empty stomach. That’s why I signed a bill making school meals free for Minnesota students, no questions asked. Instead of banning books, let’s ban hunger. Happy National School Lunch Week!

My patient had her 3 kids in clinic. Her youngest daughter asked if I was the doctor? I said “yes, I will be helping your mommy today.” She replied, “Im going to be a doctor!” Her big sis followed with a big “Me, too!” Then we all gave each other high✋🏾s. Representation matters.

For me, that’s how I need to honor him. Someday I’ll share the story with the world, and hopefully he’ll always know I loved him.

I finished the rough draft for my YA novel this past week, “Med Frag,” which is short for medically fragile - written about a 17yo foster teen who finds herself in the same situation, but with the support he desperately needed. I’ll keep imagining a better future for all of us.

I lost my brother Kevin a few years ago. He had a hard life. He was diagnosed with DM1 before aging out of foster care into a world that was unprepared to help him. He eventually had most of the downstream effects and it didn’t end well. Today is his birthday.
