Okay so making his mane have the right side profile has been my latest obsession and I just pinned all the pieces on and I'm SO pleased with how it looks

Third time's the charm! finally happy with his face (and my clippers have been handed to my boyfriend with instructions to hide them from me so I don't ruin the shave chasing perfection again)
Aaah I'm so excited to be nearing the finish line with punk Kovu! He's turning out even better than I'd hoped 😍

(If you saw this post a second ago oops sorry I posted the wrong pics)
Sometimes I remember that six years ago I unleashed this sailor nigel mask on the world, and every once in a while I still see him pop up in random places on the internet
He looks a bit rough now, but at least he's got company on my bookshelf 😂
I'm really happy with how the removable snakebites turned out!
I wanted to find a way to attach them that let you take them off without leaving a trace, and I feel like it totally worked
I'm so glad the time I spent trial and erroring my way through making his mane paid off, it took forever but it looks exactly how I pictured it in my head
Designing Kovu's eye mesh today! They're going to be sublimation printed (which is definitely not a thing I do to avoid painting /s)
If anyone has any critique I'm totally open to it, drawing the eyes is by far the part I'm the least confident in 😅

I can't decide if Kovu should have five or four fingered handpaws 😭
If I did four fingers I could add a little dew claw nub that's purely decorative, and it would maybe be more accurate?? I keep going back and forth

Before and after of kovu face 2.0:
You can't really see any of the worst spots in pictures, but version 1 I spent so long trying to smooth out the shave that it just got shorter and shorter until some areas on the cheek were almost like velvet. Oops! V2 is so much nicer
Also wow I'm overwhelmed and humbled by the response to punk Kovu 💜 I've been making cosplay stuff and then prop making professionally for a little bit and nothing's ever compared to the warm welcome I've been getting from the furry community here and on tiktok
I played around with my Kovu sculpt to make it symmetrical and a bit more adaptable to different expressions (vs Kovu's built in smirk), and I'm thinking I might start selling some TPU printed bases if there's any interest 👀
Basically I figured out that if I add these mesh pillows filled with reticulated foam and sew them on only at the top corner, I can have that disney volume and swoop but it still moves around
I'm kind of loving the idea of making more "your furry awakening" fursuits once Kovu is done, adapting animated characters into a 3D Thing is such a fun challenge
What characters would y'all think of for that category?
Okay I would 100% not call myself an artist, 2d art is by far the thing I'm weakest at, but I gotta say I'm pretty happy with this eye mesh I designed for Kovu
(Also crit is totally welcome I haven't printed them yet and I know so many of y'all out there are incredible artists)
A fun fact about me is that I'm decent at making things but absolutely terrible at drawing them
Anyway, here's an idea I have for a potential premade I might make of a highland bull
Accidentally shaved the fur a bit too short on Kovu's face so now he's getting a brand new one, which hopefully I won't mess up this time!
It sucks but oh well, mistakes happen when you're new and I'd rather remake the face than sell something I'm not happy with
@auzutea
Thanks!! It's 3d printed in TPU with infill only (with a couple spots built up with foam because I decided the eyebrows needed editing), so it's flexible and breathable! It's lined with spacer mesh, and there's removable padding 😊
I actually think my favourite part about fursuit making is getting to make things with such strong expressions and personalities again, even if it's a totally different context
I did it in kind of a weird way (which feels like my catchphrase at this point 😂), embedding these little leather rivet things into the base and resin printing a piercing that fits onto the head of the bolt
Gotta love when the night goes from "I'm just gonna do some tiny touch ups on the shave of the face fur" to "well fuck I guess I'm sewing a new face again" because you can't stop being a perfectionist and it bites you in the ass when you go too far
Oh god i forgot how much clearer my brain is on ADHD meds.
2 months without while I tried (and still haven't managed) to switch my care over to the nhs and I finally said fuck it and paid full price, and I finally feel like I can actually get things done
This is also why I'm only making premades for now - until I can get into the swing of being able to work consistently from home and have good and accurate estimates for how long things will take me to make, I don't want to take on any fursuit commissions
@GooGastGoodies
But essentially, I patterned it with these weird pillow shapes in place and then wound up taking them out because they made the mane too bulky, but bc it was patterned with them in place it falls in that nice shape away from the head
The great part about 3D modelling is that I can make each one of my premades (and eventually commission work once I open for that) fully unique in their expression and personality, but it's easy to adapt the sculpt into something that could work for lots of different characters
@GooGastGoodies
Oh my god the mane was by far the hardest part 😭 there was so much trial and error so I don't really have pictures or patterns to share since it changed so much along the way, but next time I make a lion I promise I'll make a proper tutorial!
@HouseOfCardsFur
It's just called car wrap vinyl! It comes in all sorts of finishes - matte, shiny, glitter, velvet, leather, etc. You heat it up with a heat gun and stretch it over a shape
@Astris_Fursuits
@gutzkinq
basically it just makes all the fur lay in the direction you want it to, and it helps the fur direction flow nicely between pieces and makes it nice and neat
Both of these pics are before shaving, but the first pic is after steaming!
@CraftyFallenFox
Definitely planning on doing commissions in the future!! I want to make another premade or two first, since this is only the second fursuit head I've ever made (disclaimer I'm also a professional prop maker so I had an existing skill base) - but absolutely!
@lilnoodledragon
A few things! First I pre shaved most of the pieces (other than the longer parts and the pieces directly next to them) vs shaving at the end, and I trimmed the edges around the parts that have colour transitions before sewing it together so they've got that nice crispy edge
@CandyCanine505
I'm so surprised there aren't more kovu suits actually, and thanks!! I'm a newer maker so I'm just starting out 😊 I'm a freelance prop maker professionally, but I've only just started giving fursuits a go!
@tollewut
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it, and I'm glad my sculpting background comes through in my rough sketches haha! I'll never be a proper 2d artist, it's just not where my heart's at, but I'm glad I can do enough to get my ideas across 💜
@Astris_Fursuits
@gutzkinq
It's also really useful if you suddenly find that the lovely thick fur you used is nice quality but kind of curled and crimped at the base, if you steam it and brush it out a lot you can straighten the fibers a decent amount
(Pics from my first fursuit, both pre final shave)
@WereSchnauzer
😂 yep he's real! He's a silicone mask with a worbla core so the silicone keeps its shape. The teeth are made from those plastic beads you put in hot water, and he has very cursed glass doll eyes (one of which is now cracked, adding to the cursed vibe)
@P0SSUMPIT
That would be so much fun!! I feel like the interesting challenge would be making sure he looks Like Balto and not a different wolfdog, and I do love an interesting challenge
@GooGastGoodies
Basically just tons and tons of trial and error and taking in seams and adding pieces until it all sat right 😅 but I've been really picky about it being one flowing disney mane with Volume
@GooGastGoodies
I also made the pieces around the side of the face extra wide and folded them back so there's some extra bulk around each side of his face, and added a V shape under his chin that connects to them. There's also a little v shaped pillow in the front of the chest
@Zak__Light
Thank you! Yeah I've been making silicone masks and creature cosplays for years, but this is fursuit number 2! I'm thinking sometime around end of next week, but I'll keep people updated when I know more specifically! Still figuring out how to estimate how long these take me
@COLORCARNAGE
Yeah seeing how slowly things are moving is scary, but as a newer maker I'm still less scared of that risk than I am of taking on commissions before I'm ready. I was lucky that my first sold pretty quickly so fingers crossed that luck continues 🤞
@XaverLion
I'd love to make more lions!! I'll be making another premade or two before I start taking commissions, since this is only the second fursuit head I've ever made, and I want to make sure I know how long things will take and get more efficient before doing commission work
@oakleyscons
I feel that!! I also live in the middle of nowhere and I only learned to drive a year ago, before that my boyfriend had to drive me places for extrovert enrichment time
@Schakura_
I'd love to do commissions, but I think I want to make one or two more premades first - this is only the second fursuit head I've ever made, and I'd like to be better at estimating how long things are going to take me before I start promising anyone anything 💜
@BreannaK81720
@hackoon
This was my first suit so I'm not entirely sure I'm the right person to ask 😅 I will say I wish I'd made the 3d eyes I modelled a little deeper because I think the eye following illusion is more effective when the eye mesh part is a bit further back
@RedMoonHawk
Awesome! I just have to make a second version so there's an option for printing with rigid filaments too, since I did mine with tpu and it's thicker (so it has structural integrity while being flexible vs a shell like you'd have for rigid filaments) I'll do that this weekend!
