We heard you might need a temporary home for the upcoming
@NBA
season,
@Raptors
. We'd love to have you in Kansas City.
Mayor Lucas and members of the KS and MO delegation today encouraged the NBA and Raptors to select Kansas City as the team's host city for the 2020-21 season:
Wearing a mask or face covering can be uncomfortable, but this is a necessary step to ensure we can save lives and keep our economy open. We wear masks to protect our loved ones, those around us, and their loved ones.
Mayor Lucas’s updated Order goes into effect on Monday.

If not, here's a thread of helpful information for today:
Today,
@QuintonLucasKC
is introducing an ordinance that would remove arrest warrants for low-level code violations such as parking tickets.
We should not criminalize poverty.
That’s what reforms need to be about, and that’s what we’ll continue working toward.
The City Council just passed Mayor Lucas's ordinance to remove marijuana from the City Code of Ordinances.
The City doesn’t need to be in the marijuana policing business—and we remain focused on helping open doors to new opportunities & empowering people to make a decent living.
Thanks to our
@SouthwestAir

As part of Kansas City’s commitment to conserving electricity for our residents, we are actively communicating with our downtown partners and have requested that the downtown skyline go dark tonight. City Hall will also turn off all exterior lights.
On her last day,
@PressSec
graciously shared her podium with Mayor Lucas ahead of meetings with
@POTUS
and senior administration officials to discuss ways we can all—the administration, mayors, law enforcement, and our communities—work together to build safer cities.
Anyone who has been charged with possession of marijuana and/or paraphernalia in Kansas City Municipal Court can apply for a mayoral marijuana pardon here:
#420day
On this day, let’s resolve to (at least):
➡️ Decriminalize marijuana in Missouri and Kansas
➡️ Expunge records for all those convicted of past stand-alone marijuana offenses
➡️ Correct Missouri’s inequitable marijuana operation and farming licensing
“I have no interest in restricting anyone’s freedom. But we do have interest in saving lives, & the important thing is this isn’t just a choice about you, it’s about everybody around you—your friends, your family, anyone you bump into, & keeping them safe.”
BREAKING ‼️
Mayor Lucas and City Council just passed an ordinance preventing source of income discrimination for renters, which make up roughly 50% of Kansas City’s population.
If you can legally pay the rent, it shouldn’t matter how you pay the rent.
Officers of
@kcpolice
climbed all 29 flights of stairs at City Hall in heavy equipment to remember the thousands of lives lost during the

Last year, we sued a gun manufacturer who helped traffic illegal firearms—which were used in murders—into our city.
It subsequently went bankrupt. Then the owner applied for a new sales license, which ATF awarded in less than a month.
So we're suing ATF.
Precious cargo arrived at TMC/UH this morning! As outlined by the federal and state governments, these are slated to go to our frontline staff who have been selflessly helping patients battling COVID.

Today, I'm blessed to be celebrating another birthday. This year, I also reflect on my first year as Mayor of Kansas City.
Thank you for this privilege—I look forward to our next year together.
Today, City Council passed two items to curb gun violence:
✅ Ban switches that modify handguns into deadly, automatic weapons
✅ Ban minors from purchasing bullets without parental consent
We have a duty as local government to use every tool in our toolbox to save lives.
Today, I joined more than 7,000 fellow advocates for gun safety, demanding federal action against gun violence. The bottom line is, we don’t need magic, we need background checks and common sense reforms surrounding gun safety.
Thank you

More than 70% of guns collected by KCPD in 2021 connected to violent crimes were produced by the 15 largest gun manufacturers in America.
Manufacturers who flood our cities with crime guns must be held accountable.

PASSED:
✔️ Mayor Lucas ordinance that will keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers

Thank you to the many, many community advocates who've led efforts on both of these policies – they will save lives.

Real reform means creating alternative means of accountability for violations that previously resulted in incarceration, like parking tickets and non-moving violations—and rejecting overly punitive measures that disproportionately harm poor Kansas Citians.
In an ordinance dropping today and cosponsored by
@AndreaBough
, we are proposing creation of a KC administrative court to handle all parking tickets and non-moving violations. Importantly, incarceration would no longer be imposed in any part of the process.
Today, on Transgender Day of Visibility, we are proud to host Assistant Secretary for the US Department of Health and Human Services, Admiral Rachel Levine as we celebrate our transgender community members and listen to their stories.
