Congratulations to Judge Kentanji Brown-Jackson on her confirmation to Supreme Court Justice. Today she becomes the first black woman Supreme Court Justice, the highest position of the land, after the 160 years of the Emancipation Proclamation. American history has been made.

I am saddened to learn of the passing of beloved Baton Rouge anchor Donna Britt. To know Donna was to love her. Not only was her talent as an anchor part of the fabric of our community but her heart for this community was evident in her countless service.

My prayers and condolences are with the family, friends, and LSU teammates of Wayde Sims. I receive a phone call each time a homicide occurs. All of the lives lost weigh heavily on my mind, and this morning’s tragedy is no different. We simply must do better as a community.

This week we not only celebrate Juneteenth, but also honor the 67th anniversary of the Baton Rouge Bus Boycott. At the time our African-American citizens courageously stood up to racial discrimination by organizing carpools during the six day protest.

This morning I signed the proclamation declaring Juneteenth Day in Baton Rouge and EBR Parish. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom.

The CDC has classified EBR as a community of High Transmission and strongly recommends that everyone wear a mask in indoor public spaces. Wear a mask, get tested, and get vaccinated/boosted if you haven’t done so already.

Baton Rouge, as curfew ends this morning please remember to stay in place if possible. Many of our roadways may have downed trees, power lines, or standing water. Crews are still out working to improve the condition of our roads.

I instituted a mask order last week, and support Governor Edwards in his latest order today. I will enforce these common sense steps, as we have been doing in East Baton Rouge Parish by communicating directly with businesses or non-profits who directly interact with the public.

EBR remains under a dusk to dawn curfew. Residents should prepare to remain in place beginning at dusk tonight, August 30, lasting until dawn on August 31. The extension is to ensure resident safety as our crews continue to assess and mitigate safety hazards on our roadways.

Today I intend to sign an executive order to mandate face coverings when residents are inside businesses. This is to protect the health of residents and visitors and to assist in the safe reopening of the City-Parish economy without the need for the strict mitigation.

Nurse Carla Brown lost her husband to COVID-19 before vaccines were available to our community. She's made it her mission to prevent this loss for thousands of others in our community. She's issued over 2,500 vaccines so far, and she doesn't plan on stopping there.

I am saddened by the passing of Governor Kathleen Blanco. She was a friend and mentor. She paved the way for women in government. A true public servant, she consistently demonstrated her her genuine care and concern for the citizens she served. 2 Timothy 4:7-8
