I also think that working on this interpretability is essential. As microscopes become fancier and throughput higher, the current status quo, where automated analysis is almost always followed by some form of human curation, is probably not tenable much longer. 3/

Cool examples (out of many) are the Piscis spot detector by @zwniu @arjunrajlab and btrack by @KristinaUlicna @quantumjot. I think neural networks can help us a lot with interpretability (versus more traditional approaches) as they are inherently 'probabilistic' machines. 2/

Our paper on cell tracking is now on BiorXiv. We aim to open up the black box that is 3D cell tracking. We were not necessarily inspired by anything in particular, but I do think we are part of a broader trend aiming to make image analysis more statistically interpretable. 1/

It does not mean that Wimbledon would cease existing. It would be played every year. It is just that it would not be considered a Grand Slam tournament every year but only when it turn comes. This year Grand Slams could be Buenos Aires, Delhi, Accra and Shanghai. Etc.

Ik recenseerde voor @deNLBoekengids Elizabeth Jones' (@DrDinoDNA) boek over dino's en DNA en over wetenschap en 'celebrity'. Een boek dat de vraag oproept of er iets is als 'authentieke' wetenschap. Onder de bezielde begeleiding van @daanmulderdaan.

Agree, but I think actaually their similarity to flow cytometry plots is key here. FloJo actually allows you to draw gates around clusters in tSNE 🙄
UMAPs offer no real quantitative assessment of single-cell genomics data and have only been used (and continue to be) because of their visual similarity to fluorescence-based microscopy images.
