Twenty years ago today, Matthew Shepard succumbed to his injuries caused by one of the most atrocious anti-gay hate crimes in history.
He was 21 years old, which means he's been gone almost as long as we had the pleasure of having him in our lives.
May we never forget how or why this happened and how or why it continues to happen today. Take a moment to hold the Shepards in your hearts today and pledge to help us erase hate in your community.
Today, we have the audacious goal of raising $5,000 on Facebook to help us continue this work. If 250 of you each donated $20 to help honor this milestone, we'd get there. Can you help us today while taking time to remember Matt?

Matthew,
We never knew each other of course. But 20 yrs later, I lit a candle in my house. Towards your memory & towards your life. U have never been forgotten. I know ur friends & family know. But there r thousands of others who will never understand, much less forget U.

It was a parents worst nightmare that took place at the national and global level. Parents every where saw what they feared would happen to their child.

20 years seems like yesterday. Where did it go. Matthew was in the Irish news today here in Ireland on it being 20 years ago since Matthew passed. People didn't forget him. God bless Matthew and his family this day. May he be at peace. RIP

I was two years older than Matt when he died. He was killed 8 months after I entered the news business. I interviewed his mother as a reporter in San Antonio around 2007.

I remember feeling incredibly angry, horrified and sad when this happened. I remember it well. My heart breaks for Matt and his family. 💔
