This legislation expanded prior federal hate crimes law. The Matthew Shepard Foundation extends their lasting gratitude to the lawmakers and advocates who made this change possible, and who have continued to #EraseHate through these difficult times.

Sixteen years ago, on October 28, 2009, courageous advocates and legislators worked with Judy and Dennis and the Obama Administration to pass the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

On the evening of October 6, 1998 , Matthew Shepard visited the Fireside Lounge and the events that followed led to his death in one of the most infamous LGBTQ+ hate crimes in American history. Matthew died on October 12 with his family by his side.
