Medicine lost one of its greats this week. My grandpa, Dr. William (Bill) Segar, had an illustrious career that spanned nearly 60 years from @IUMedSchool and @RileyChildrens, @YaleMed, @MayoClinicCV, and @uwsmph and @WiscPediatrics.

Wild you can build this in a single prompt with @boltdotnew . Many cardiology trainees have trouble tracking procedures and graduation requirements. Thanks @boltdotnew for helping the next generation of cardiologists.

My hope is that future trainees won’t have to piece together this information from scratch like I did. The transition from training to practice is challenging enough-having the right roadmap shouldn’t be. Link to the book: #MedicalCareers #PhysicianJobs.

This isn’t just my perspective—it’s collective wisdom from colleagues who’ve been through this transition. Topics include:. • Interview strategies & sample questions. • Contract red flags to avoid. • Comparing practice models. • Building your professional brand

So I compiled everything I learned into a comprehensive guide—“The Physician’s Job Search Playbook.”. It covers the full journey: from crafting your CV to contract negotiations and understanding malpractice, with insights from physicians across multiple specialties.

One thing became clear: your first attending position sets the trajectory for your entire career. Yet we often approach this critical decision with less preparation than we’d give to a board exam.

Key areas where most trainees struggle:. • Building an effective professional network. • Understanding compensation models (RVUs, productivity bonuses, etc.). • Negotiating contracts without legal expertise. • Preparing for interviews beyond clinical knowledge.

I reached out to colleagues across specialties, from academic medicine to private practice. Each conversation revealed new insights about the job search process. The knowledge was there, but scattered across individual experiences and informal conversations.

The challenge isn’t just finding job listings—it’s understanding what to look for. • How do you evaluate different practice models?. • What questions should you ask in interviews?. • How do you know if a contract is fair?. Most of us are flying blind.

During fellowship, I realized there was something medical school never taught us: how to actually find and land our first attending job. I was lost. So I started asking everyone I could find about their experiences. Here’s what I learned 🧵
