On 15th September I had the joy of giving a lecture on my replication of #MarthaWashington’s purple silk gown @TheWadsworth — with new discoveries on the 'many hands' that made it — and #Swedish silk in early America! I'm grateful to @plbhalbert. Now onto the next phase! ✍️

Thank you for sharing my research! It was an honor to study this fascinating object for more than eight years and create a handsewn replica of the gown, now on view @TheWadsworth

Years of careful scholarship, empathy, and a hands-on, sewing machine-free approach make for a compelling exercise in historic dress replication by @cynthiawriter. @Material_Race #VastEarlyAmerica #SlaveryArchive #HerStory

Sarah Sprague was a Nipmuc craftswoman who made her living making baskets and repairing woven chair seats. This pair of chairs is said to be one of the last Sprague re-seated in her lifetime. They are now preserved in the #OSVMuseumCollection.

This chair, made with handmade upholstery tacks and French-inspired construction, has been attributed to the Thomas Jefferson's Monticello joinery by the curators at Colonial Williamsburg. Monticello joinery, c. 1790-1815, @colonialwmsburg #AntiqueOfTheDay

Hearing reports of "Indian sculptures on a rock" at the Great Falls of the Connecticut River, the Reverend David McClure (1748-1820) of @Dartmouth made plans to see things for himself in 1789. #VastEarlyAmerica

Out today! My @BBCRadio3 essay, 'Ruffs in Jamestown'. What are these clunky iron tools, & what do they have to do with English colonialism? How do Indigenous novels & artworks shed different light on ruffs, and on Renaissance self-fashioning more broadly? https://t.co/JN4JZpWgeE

Although we don't know his name, there was an enslaved goldsmith who created objects in Samuel Vernon’s Newport shop in the mid-1700s & he may have had a hand in this tankard's creation. For more stories of Black craftspeople, check out @blackcraftspeopleda. #BlackHistoryMonth
