Some advice for foreign friends living in Rwanda:
Many foreigners in Rwanda get frustrated when people call, ‘Muzungu!’ Today I had an interesting experience at Umuganda. Two men watching me were talking and one said, ‘Atari muzungu, ari umunyarwanda!’ This made me think…

I love the way people come together to solve community problems in Rwanda. Today we rebuilt a bridge in the Kadahenda neighborhood of our sector
#Kimonyi
. What did you do for umuganda today?
#RwandaWorks
Dore umwari azasama inda kandi azabyara umuhungu, azitwa Imanweli, risobanurwa ngo “Imana iri kumwe natwe”. Merry Christmas from Matayo and Mutoni! (Also turned 48 today and celebrated 27 years married to this beautiful lady yesterday!)
Beautiful morning for umuganda in Umudugudu wa Rurembo, Musanze. Someday I’ll get to tell my grandchildren about how we built our city!

Stop whatever you are doing and
#VisitMusanze
now! Or at least take a moment to enjoy this photo :) The recent rains have cleared the skies and provided some spectacular views of the Virungas! What an incredible place we get to call home!
Umuganda w’ukwezi 3.2023 This is one of my favorite moments of the month knowing that hundreds of thousands of Rwandans and friends are working together to build the nation! Let’s get our hands dirty!

Have been waiting to get this picture for 11 years!
@AkageraPark
is becoming one of the best places in the world to find these beautiful cats. We've seen leopards in all four of our most recent visits. Akagera is truly a world-class wildlife experience!
#VisitRwanda
What a day today at
#RwandaDay
! It was such an honor to be among 6,000+ people welcoming President Kagame and the First Lady and hearing stories of Rwanda’s transformation over the past 30 years. We are proud to be friends of Rwanda and excited to get back to work in Musanze!
4.Take time to visit neighbors. In Rwanda, its normal to invite yourself for a visit! A Rwandan proverb says, ‘Ifuni ibagara ubushuti n’akarenge!’ (The tool that tends friendship is the foot!). This is one of the best ways to strengthen relationships in your neighborhood. 7/8
1.Make an effort to learn some Kinyarwanda. You don’t have to be fluent, but at least learning greetings and basic conversation shows people here that you really care about them. It also opens the door to relationships with many people who do not speak Western languages.

I’d love to hear from
#RwOT
any other suggestions you have for how we friends living in Rwanda can be better about engaging in community. Please share your ideas in the comments!
#RwandaWorks
(Their words meant, ‘He is not a Muzungu, he is Rwandan!) It seems that the ideas of being ‘Muzungu’ or ‘Rwandan’ in my neighborhood are not just fixed to racial identity, but rather to how you engage in community.

The city closest to the gorillas habitat is called Musanze, in
@MusanzeDistrict
, one scenic city you will remember all your life. Make time to hang out there, you will thank me later.
@gatjmv
Their words were so encouraging! Not only because I hope one day to be a Rwandan citizen, but also because it shows that Rwanda really is open to outsiders willing to do the work to engage.
So here are tips for those who want to transcend the name ‘Muzungu’:
3/8
3. If you want to help people, partner with local leaders. Cell and Sector leaders have lists of priority needs and vetted beneficiaries and an incredible accountability system that ensures your donations reach the intended need. This is something I really love about Rwanda! 6/8
2. Participate in Umuganda community work days. These meetings are a wonderful way to meet neighbors, learn about how local government works, and contribute to the development of your neighborhood. Someone will always be willing to translate the meeting for you.

Sometimes the beauty of this country just takes my breath away! The views of the Virungas on the way back to Musanze this evening were spectacular! These shots are from just before Kivurunga.

Just returned from another amazing visit to

with my daughter Anna. This time the elephants and rhinos were the stars of the show (along with the always incredible scenery)! Here are some of my favorite shots:

Just changed my profile name from Matthew Miller to my preferred name Matt just to be sure I am not confused as the one at the US State Department making politicized statements about Rwanda. I stand against the ongoing genocide against Kinyarwanda speaking citizens of the DRC.
So thankful to be back in Rwanda with my cancer free wife!!! Thanks for all your prayers and messages of support! We are enjoying many sweet reunions and are so glad to be home!

Its the 100th day of school
@VVAMusanze
! We have a tradition of dressing up as 100-year old abasaza n’abakecuru to celebrate! I love the creativity of our VVA students!
Brewed Rwandan coffee on the top Mt. Bisoke yesterday. I think I can claim the highest cup of coffee in Rwanda (at least for yesterday)! -12,175 Ft Where is the most amazing place you have made coffee?

🌍 Day Every Day! I’m one day late, but had to share this image from this morning at Lake Burera. Rwanda has an incredible natural heritage and I am thankful for leaders who prioritize its protection.

Whilst Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is known primarily for gorilla trekking, a variety of animals live in the park and we were fortunate enough to have some very special visitors at Singita Kwitonda Lodge this week!
Tweeting this morning from

As our children get older and the ‘empty nest’ approaches, days like yesterday become even more precious. Congrats Anna on being the first of more than 20 hikers to reach the summit of Mt. Bisoke!

So proud of my 15 year-old daughter AnnaMarie. Pretty sure she is the youngest lady ever to climb the Rwandan peak of Mt. Sabyinyo! 2 of 5 Rwandan volcanos down, Gahinga is next on her list!

what did you work on in your neighborhoods for umuganda today?
Spent this

exploring a new section of whitewater on the Mukungwa river with my friend Renson from Kingfisher Journeys. Rwanda’s natural heritage is incredible, and there is still so much to be discovered!

So glad to be back home in beautiful Rwanda! In this photo taken from NR 2 on the way from Kigali to Musanze the sun is setting over the Nyabarongo river valley in Rusiga.

Beautiful start to the day watching the sun rise over Musanze and praying God’s blessings over our city. What an incredible place we have the privilege to call home!

I remember thinking on my first visit to
@AkageraPark
16 years ago how awesome it would be to see lions on the Kirara plains. This weekend it happened! The resilience and rebirth of Akagera mirrors the resilience of Rwanda.

Not in Rwanda right now…visiting family and friends in the US, but I thought my Rwandan friends would enjoy this photo from our hike yesterday. I am thankful for those who prioritized conservation in the Rocky Mts. more than 100 years ago so we can enjoy this still today!
More evidence that
@AkageraPark
is becoming one of the best places in Africa to encounter leopards. This young one was eating on the remains of a hippo killed by lions last night on the shores of lake Ihema. This is Rwanda!!!
Living so close to the north-western border of Rwanda I often think about the vastly different realities of security, development, and quality of life people just a few kilometers from us have compared to Rwanda. I am thankful today for those whose sacrifice made this possible.
Had the opportunity to visit the new Ellen Degeneres campus of
@SavingGorillas
this weekend. It is a world-class facility that should not be missed! The 360° theater is amazing, the exhibits are informative and beautiful, and the setting is stunning! Congrats to all involved!
For all who have said
#NeverAgain
the time to speak up is now. Recent media and eyewitness reports show genocidal rhetoric and acts are happening against Kinyarwandan speaking DRC citizens in North Kivu. People are being killed. Never again is happening now.

Would really appreciate your prayers for my wife Andrea (Mutoni 😊). After a routine mammogram in August she was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. She will have a lumpectomy surgery in the US tomorrow. It was found early so she has a great prognosis. Thank you! 🙏🏼
So proud of Rwanda for its handling of this entire pandemic and its preparation to receive and distribute these vaccines. I cannot imagine a better place in the world to have been for the past year!

Our family stands in solidarity with our Rwandan friends as today begins the 30th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

My favorite shot from our recent trek. Rwanda is reversing the trend in global conservation— gorilla numbers are rising, parks are expanding rather than being encroached— what a privilege it was to meet this young gorilla who represents a bright future for nature in Rwanda!
Had an incredible meeting hosted by
@cakamanzi
gathering local and national leaders of infrastructure and government to address root challenges for investors in Burera. My confidence as an investor has increased exponentially! Great things are coming to Lake Burera!

In the same situation…we’ve been ready to build for two years but land usage cannot be changed so no permits can be granted…we are ready to create jobs and tourism income. Who can help?
