I did a quick search of Boulder Police Officer Eric Talley. Here is a 2013 Daily Camera story of the officer helping to rescue a family of ducks from a drainage ditch. He was killed today trying to rescue grocery shoppers from an active shooter.
BPD says Officer Eric Talley, who was killed, was the first to respond to the scene. BPD says a suspect is in custody.
