A) SFFH author in Escape Pod, Apparition Lit, Apex’s Robotic Ambitions, and more B) Editor, first reader, proofreader C) Just a sleepy cat D) All of the above
I am thrilled, honored, and, frankly, still in disbelief, to be able to announce that I’ve had a dystopian bodymod SF story accepted by
@Analog_SF
magazine! 😱😱
Trying to see if this is common knowledge or not…
Do you know what a killdeer is without looking it up to find out?
If you do know, have you ever seen/heard one? Do you know simply from being an amazingly informed/smart person?
Hey
#WritingCommunity
, if you titled your book literally what it’s about, what would it be called? 🤔
Mine would be something like: Dealing with Space Pirates Very Unwillingly.
Hey

, I'm so excited to have a short story included in the Triangulation: Extinction anthology, out now from Parsec Ink. Check it out!
Hey
#WritingCommunity
, how was April for your writing? Thanks to quarantine I wrote almost 45,000 words on various projects. 😱 Is quarantine helping or hindering your progress?
Do identical twins have identical voices? As in, they could be perfectly mistaken for one another? Totally not asking for a novel writing reason… hehheh… 🤓
Writers, what’s the longest you’ve worked on a single project?
I have a novel I’ve been hammering into shape since 2021. Not remotely the only thing I’ve worked on in that time, but I’m so close to finally calling it done.
I’ve been stuck on a scene and down with writer’s block for like two weeks then looked at the scene today and just … started writing. No idea how I got unstuck.
Anyone else have something like this happen?
When writing a first draft, do you barrel forward through the story without looking back, or are you like me and constantly have to reread what came before to make sure you put in the details you wanted, and to remember where you are, and what the characters were doing last?

Does it make sense in my far flung space opera that the characters drink coffee? I mean, I have no idea how many centuries in the future they are, or if Earth ever existed. My instincts say no, but my personal preference says coffee should exist in all universes. 🤔
Hey
#WritingCommunity
, how do you get the majority of your
#writing
done? On a PC? A laptop? By hand? I like being able to drag my laptop all over the house so I can write wherever. What about you?
What is the inciting incident of your WIP? Be as specific or vague as you want.
Mine starts when a lady walks into a bar... she’s looking for the MC, although he doesn’t know that yet.
In a town clinging to the bones of the fallen world, to look back is death. “Milestone and the Fifth World” by Marissa James. Our March story at Mysterion.
@MaroftheBooks
Writers, what is the setting where your WIP starts?
My characters stop at a sky pier—a tower where they can recharge and restock their flying home. And then stuff starts going sideways from there…
I’ve been so close to whining about my submissions luck for a while now, 1 acceptance and 50+ rejections on the year has grown a bit disheartening…
But the right stars must’ve aligned, as I just received 2 acceptances in 1 day! 🤯
What is the number 1 thing you need in order to get into the flow of writing? A certain space or writing setup? Music, snacks, a furry co-writer, other?
I’m more than halfway into draft 2 of my manuscript, hooray!
When you do a second draft, what’s the biggest change you make? Do you tend to add, delete, rewrite, or something else? Do you make big changes or little ones?
Is it just me, or are action scenes slower to write than normal ones, because I’m trying to convey the action as precisely as possible, with as few words as possible, to keep the feeling of speed /action...?
Feels counterintuitive but this is where I’m at right now.
Hey writers, do you find you’re inspired most by another sort of media when you write—art, music, movies, etc.? Does one of these inspire your creativity more than others?
I find that the right music can inspire my writing, and I often pull art references into my work.
I finished the first draft of my manuscript today! A week later than I thought, but I’m happy with what I have.
Time to take a reading break and then get myself a well-deserved reward. 😊
Does your MC resemble you?
That’s a no for me—both of my current WIPs feature male MCs who are taller than average ... and I am neither of those things. 😂
What is something you realized about your WIP while writing it, that didn’t occur to you at all beforehand?
I have just realized my WIP is essentially The Last Unicorn in space (but not actually including a unicorn).
Have you ever written a story only to figure out what it’s about after you’ve finished?
I thought I was writing a story about one thing, only for it to turn out the themes built into something entirely different.
Writers, when do you do your story planning? I don’t mean drafting the story, I mean planning what you’ll write the next time you sit in front of the computer. In the shower? While driving? Or, perhaps, while facing the blank page?
For me, it’s usually as I’m falling asleep.
How do you pick names for characters? Do you keep a list of names until a character fits?
I tend to go the other way, and cycle through potential names for the character until I find one that sounds right.
Where did the main characters of your WIP come from? Inspiration from real life? Somewhere else? A mix of sources?
I’d love to know what inspired you to create them.
Going through my novel for edits, it looks like every chapter is 9-10 pages long, without any planning on my part.
What’s your average chapter length, if you know it?
Hey
#WritingCommunity
, happy Monday! What are your goals for the day/ week? I’m hoping to submit 2 stories to markets ( and now that I’ve said it, I have to do it...!😅)
I started this WIP with only three scenes clear(ish) in my head, and now I’m almost at 50k words and still going.
How much do you need to have figured out before you start writing a story?
Do you generally write POV characters of a certain age group, or does this vary in your writing? Do you think there’s a reason that you do/don’t prefer POV characters based on age?
I just got a surprisingly nice rejection letter for a short story that summed up with ‘send us your stuff again next time!’
It’s amazing how a few kind words can be such an encouragement as a writer. 😊
Fellow light sleepers—
I sleep with earplugs to cut down on the sound of my other half’s snoring. It’s the only way I can fall asleep.
The other day someone said this inability to fall asleep is a mental block and I should ‘just get over it’.
What say you?
Guys, I’ve been nominated for the Coyotl award!!!! 😱🤯
Even better, the nominated story is about a coyote character.
I’m so thrilled to have this story on the ballot!❤️
So exciting! Our story, “Coyote Woman Sings the Blues” by Marissa James, has been nominated for a Cóyotl Award!
Congrats to
@MaroftheBooks
and thanks for writing such an awesome story!
Hey

, I want to know about the villain of your WIP. Show me what they’re like in GIF form.
My villains don’t always remain entirely villainous, so here’s mine, when he finally runs into the heroes:
Do you ever have a day when you simply can’t put down a single word,
#Writingcommunity
?
I try to write daily, but invariably about 1-2 days out of a month I just can’t make words work and have to do something else.
In grade school we had encyclopedias with Phoenician letters in them. I copied down each letter in order to write stories in code. My teacher got annoyed at me for looking at encyclopedias in my free time.
What’s the most harmless thing you did in school and got in trouble for?
When you have an idea for a new story/scene, how long do you let it stew before you write it? Or do you get to it right away?
If I write an idea right away, it generally requires more editing. If I think on it for weeks or months, the mental editing has often been done already.
Hey writers, what’s new in what you’re working on? Anything exciting going on in your WIP?
I just finished and submitted a big project, now I’m taking some time to catch up with short stories and reading as recovery.
I’ve heard it’s bad practice, but I’m one of those writers who uses the tab button for paragraph indents. I know I should format them automatically, but I just can’t break the habit!
Writers, what bad writing habit do you have that you just can’t break?
What’s unique about the story you’re working on currently,
#WritingCommunity
, in one sentence? 🤓
I am editing a: Space opera with inter-dimensional travel and a hierarchical society of pirate clans.
I’m curious,
#Writers

Do you include physical descriptions of your characters or not? And in how much detail?
I am a very visual writer so physical appearance is noted where/how it’s relevant to the story.
My dishwasher died and likely won’t get fixed for 3 weeks, so now I’m washing dishes by hand every day, my least favorite household chore.😫 (I mean, there’s a reason I live somewhere with a dishwasher...)
What chore do you find the absolute worst?
My phone likes to autosuggest that I sign off emails as Marijuana, not Marissa. I dread the day I accidentally send one that way. 🤦♀️
What’s the best/worst autosuggestion you’ve ever been given?
OK writers, what is the best way to motivate yourself to edit? For you personally, what works?
I’ve got a plan to edit two scenes this week, and if I succeed, I’m getting tacos! (I want them so bad, it just might work!)🌮🌮🌮🤤🤤🤤
Hey writing people, how’s the writing going? What’s positive about your current project?
I’m in the throes of edits on multiple projects right now that are due in the next few weeks, and really looking forward to doing some short stories after this...!
So honored to have a story accepted by
@apexmag
for their Robotic Ambitions anthology!
Apex has been one of my favorite SFF magazines for so many years, it’s still a little surreal to think they picked my little story!🥳
Name a piece of media that inspired your WIP—a show, movie, song, book, comic book, etc. It doesn’t have to be the main inspiration, but I’d love to hear about the connection.
Who else makes notes about their story as they’re falling asleep and is pleasantly surprised that they (usually) makes sense the next day?
#WritingCommunity
So if you live with someone named Alexa.
And you get an Alexa device.
Can you change the name it answers to, or will you all live in eternal confusion for the rest of your lives?
My first acceptance announcement of the year!
So happy to say that my alien horror story (the aliens are the ones experiencing the horror) will be coming out in
@DarkVoidMag
in April!
Hey, short story writers, I’m curious—do you only write short stories, or do you have novel length projects as well? If you only write short, is there a reason why?
Hey
#WritingCommunity
, what’s one trope you’ve subverted—intentionally or not—in your writing?
In my recent WIP, I just realized the MC’s love interest never once falls into the “damsel in distress” trope of needing to be rescued—she’s the one who does the saving, usually.
I just realized in the two WIPs I’m currently working on that the main characters have completely opposite arcs—one is learning to work with others, and the other is learning to act on his own.
How’s your main character’s arc going?
I’m at that phase in edits where I question every word and sentence structure. 😫 Probably because I’ve read the whole thing over like a kajillion times, but still...
How do you feel about the use of flashbacks?
I like to be judicious about them in my own writing, and yet it always feels like I could add context with another flashback, or if I go deeper into the character’s history that will flesh them out more ...
I’m thrilled to share that my weird west apocalypse story, “Milestone and the Fifth World,” will be published in Mysterion magazine this March!
Check them out at the link below. (Btw, Patreon members get the story March 1st.)

Hey
#WritingCommunity
, am I the only one who struggles with transitioning from middle to ending of a story? I’m trying to diagnose the problem to get better at working through it, but is it just me?
Ok writers, what are you working on/did you work on last?
Me: yesterday I got a couple pages of rewrites on a chapter that is *this close* 🤏 to being done.
