@MaroftheBooks My current MC really doesn’t have any nervous habits, but I wanted to say teeth-grinders are actually so, so super healthy and their dentist never tsk tsks them about not wearing their mouthguard enough at night and their anxieties are at completely normal levels and…

@MaroftheBooks I write very dark stories so pretty much every character has a nervous habit, some more than others ...and for a lot of them said habit is alcoholism

@DiannaLGunn That makes sense with the subject matter, but now I can’t help but worry for your characters…

@MaroftheBooks My main character has OCD. One of his rituals is he keeps a shoelace in his pocket and he’ll pull it out when he’s anxious and tie knots. (Since he’s a surgeon, I thought that would be a good ritual for him.) He also likes to drum or tap his fingers on things.

@thegreenheron That’s interesting, I like how you tie it into the character’s profession.

@MaroftheBooks Cassie started chewing her nails after her fiance died. It's one way she knows she's dreaming, in the head of her other self in a parallel universe, where Cass (never the diminutive 'Cassie') has immaculate lacquered nails... Until *her* life goes sideways. Cass's bad habit is

@MaroftheBooks When Dance is in emotional pain he often feels a need to grab things, like say ‘a sturdy stick.’ He sometimes breaks things if he can't find anything sturdy enough, which might seem strange since he's a gentle healer by nature.

@MaroftheBooks I have a dragon in book 2 who clicks his tongue when he sees or hears something he dislikes or disapproves of.

@WrittenByNyte Nice, I like how there’s an aspect of story/character to how you use it.

@MaroftheBooks Huh. I don't think so. Maybe they should... In one WIP, though, the love interest runs his hand through his hair and makes a "huff" noise when he's nervous or embarrassed.

@MaroftheBooks as a grinder, I can tell you it's not. I've worn down the enamel on my teeth, get headaches, and have to wear night guards- and day guards to stop grinding.

@charbennardo Fortunately he isn’t too bad—only when frustrated or trying not to say something he’ll regret. But yeah, maybe it’s a good thing he doesn’t have a dentist to point this out to him… 😅
