nice tribute to writer Peter Shapiro, who recently passed. he did so much amazing work for @thewiremagazine in the late 90s and 00s. when I saw his byline I was immediately interested even when I knew nothing about the subject.

I did get to interview him once, briefly, probably talked for 15-20 minutes on the phone, discussed what Henry from Eraserhead might have been thinking when he listened to Fats Waller

RIP David Lynch, his sensibility transformed culture, the mix between laughter and horror, letting in so much of the world. if all he did was work on the sound design in Eraserhead his life would have been notable. the book Lynch on Lynch is a bottomless source of inspiration.

I bought an Edith Frost record from 2001, and the inner sleeve is an ad for the then-current Drag City catalog. It’s positively stunning how many classic records are here, that this is a “here’s some of our other releases” ad

I picked up an OG 1991 CD copy of MBV Loveless bc I have a sneaking suspicion it’s the best sounding version…listened in the car for (I think?) the first time ever & almost crashed twice in the first 10 min, my mind clearly elsewhere.

when this came out in 2009 I felt like the only person in the world old enough to have a deep emotional connection to the “Welcome Back, Kotter” theme and young enough to be a fan of jj & excited for the next Sincerely Yours single

I wrote about this version in a p4k feature: “Garcia and Lesh are like two dogs barking and nipping at each other while running full-speed across a field, never breaking stride, taking turns being in front” and it always brings me that sense of joy

RIP Phil Lesh. been a tough season in the Grateful Dead world. No one ever played bass like him. one of my favorite Phil bits is when he and Jerry would solo in tandem on Phil’s tune “The Eleven,” which they only played for a few years in the late 60s

RIP Achim Szepanski. The music issued by his labels changed my life, scrambling my thoughts on music and sound, suggesting possibilities, and compelling me to think and write about what I was hearing.
