I loved this novel so profoundly that its film rights were the first I pursued in 2004 after completion of LOTR. Susanna Clarke is brilliant. By God, read it if you haven't as @SketchesbyBoze recommends.
Begging everyone who hasn't already to read this book. Clarke ventures deep into the dark roots of fantasy, and the result is a book that's both a sublime work of historical fiction and hypnotically eerie in its otherworldliness. Arguably the best novel of the century thus far.
