I agree but we are part of the equilibrium in our profession and thus can change the status quo with our choices as senior scholars. We can be more tolerant of multiple methods, we can be more encouraging to the creative, and more welcoming to the curious. How science is

Mokyr's work could not have been done today in most economics departments, but the irony is that his work would not fit in history departments today, either. Methodologically he seems more 'history' than 'economics' to economists, but the content and reasoning are too economic

This is an extraordinarily generous thread to a very misguided policy. a) precisely because housing markets are localized, a 5% rent cap will bind really hard in certain hot markets; b) even though new construction is exempted, crossing the rubicon of federal rent regulation

I don't hate this policy as much as I thought I would bc this isn't traditional rent control. Think of it as macro policy—setting a nominal anchor when the Fed's target isn't working—rather than as micro policy setting the relative price of housing. The details really matter.

Best defense of high culture I’ve seen in a while. This is why I listen to Beethoven, Bach, and the other great composers.

Roger Scruton (1944-2020) was one of the most brilliant and incisive defenders of what he described as “high culture”, the West's great repository of art, literature, and philosophy that functions to bind people together into an ethical community. Here’s why it matters… 🧵
