We aren’t going to settle here in Asia since I’d have to give up my guns, but we definitely have no plans of returning to live in the states. Zoning and building ordinances are a blight upon the country.

I have a car, but it’s honestly just for big grocery hauls and because work is really out there, and this is ultimately a pretty rural city by Korean standards. I can bike to work no issue, the bus is about 10 minutes longer if I really need it.

I can walk to a major grocery store in 10 minutes. Most of the time is spent the waiting for the lights to change. Wish there were more underground crosswalks like in Ukraine—honestly the one minor thing that sucks about being a pedestrian here.

In our complex there are over 1,500 apartments in the space of a typical Costco parking lot. Our apartment is 3 bed 2 bath, and is as big as my childhood home in Arizona. There’s a mini forest, a park, and four playgrounds in the complex.

Koreans don’t really give a shit about zoning. There are single family homes next to 30 story high rises and a rice paddy. You can have homes next to stores and no one is shrieking about it ruining the chArActER of the neighborhood or some shit

I’ve spent more time outside the US than in it the last three years, and it’s really made me realize just how unlivable some aspects of the US are. Work had me in Arizona for a few, really drove home how trapped you are w/o a car in the states. Fortunately we now live in Korea

Also what the fuck if Ukraine can have great public transport in its big cities then there’s literally no excuse for a nation with about 6 billion times the GDP.

But actually you have the opposite of freedom here. You’re trapped in your metal box if you want to engage in society. Walkable cities+good public transit doesn’t mean “no car allowed” it means you don’t HAVE to use your car for every banal part of your existence.
