Middle-earth is meant to be Earth in a distant, mythic past. Tolkien calls it an “imaginary period of history,” not another world. Good question, this is something most people don’t realize.
@MapEffects Why does a different planet have the same calendar as Earth? Does that mean it is set in the distant future and actually everyone we see had ancestors from Earth who settled there?

I’m not sure what to do about Sparta…Help! 😂 I’ve messed with a few designs and just haven’t been satisfied with them. One suggestion was to use the Λ (lambda) symbol, but from what I can tell that only gets associated with Sparta around the 4th century BC. Which doesn’t fit

Now, to be fair…there are a few cartographers that I just love their work. But…even then, I am probably going to select which map I display based on what it’s depicting, whether it’s a fantasy world or real location…it will have prior meaning to me beyond the aesthetic.

For the map of The Iliad I’ve been working on, Pylos is marked by Nestor’s cup, described by Homer as too heavy for any man but Nestor to lift. An odd image for an aged king and one of the last living links to an earlier heroic world. What do you think Homer means?
