Biggest snowfall in almost 40 years, since the big 1989 snowstorm! Our official snowfall total for ILM as of 7am is 5.8 inches which ranks 13th in snow events for Wilmington.

Ya that essay part infuriated me so much, like what are we doing.

There genuinely seems to be no end in sight the way this is going. In all seriousness, we have another 3-5 hours of 1”-2” snow rates in this zone and someone will definitely try the 18”-20” mark within this zone. #NCwx

1:20AM: Southern section of earlier dry slot has seen 5”-9” of snowfall with heavy snow ongoing. From Fayetteville and northward its been 2”-5” with lighter snow ongoing. Once you go north of Durham / Wake Forest, snow has ended. Considering the circumstances, what a reward #NCwx

Looking back at this post, we have indeed seen 1”-3” so far in this zone with localized 4” in spots. I like for additional 1”-3” here and storm total might just end up in 3”-6” range. One can wonder the ceiling if not for significant dry slot earlier today. #NCwx
Painful snow hole, i know, but this dry slot continues to narrow out as time progresses. I have a feeling this offshore feature will fill in the snow in this zone. Patience everyone! Just know that I still feel confident with 2”-4” totals in this zone with localized 6”. #NCwx

My suspicion was right! Hints of ocean effect snow showers now in SE Mass. I do think this will increase in coverage across lot of coastal Mass (south of Boston) for overnight before coastal low brings mod-heavy snow far SE Cape Cod to Nantucket. #MAwx

I dabbled in forecasting for this event in Carolinas and decided to not go too heavy with dry slot and kept broad brush 6”-10”, that might be too high but 4”-8” looks decent bet even in areas with no snow through early this evening
Always see it through to the end! Especially when you have an ULL that looks like that! Hours left to go for some places hoping to see more. Doesn’t guarantee everything! But in my experience never doubt an ULL that dynamic with this kind of moisture and cold air to work

Between the coastal pivot backing in, the 700mb coming east, and the low level moisture inflow from the south we now have a consolidated snow shield. The subsidence corridor is no more.

While heavy snow continues in eastern Wake county, the western and southern sections over the next hour will see this heavier burst move in with snow rates of 1” to 2” per hour. Moderate to heavy snow also settling into Fayetteville too with rates 0.5” to 1” per hour. #NCwx

I received a confirmation of observed 1.5” per hour snow rates in this circled area. Any snow which was missing will be made up quickly under this band. While Downtown Raleigh settles into heavy band, eastern Wake county likely has seen 1.5”-2.0” of snowfall in past 90 mins #NCwx

Indianapolis has observed 0.6 inches of snowfall today...bringing our seasonal total to 27.7", and January's total to 12.4" - both totals are now the greatest since 2013-2014. #INwx

Lo and behold we got the gap to fill in over past 2 hours, still little ways left. Raleigh about to get into heavy snow action. Those rates likely are near 1” p/hr E of the city. Fayetteville has to wait just a bit as the wave from Myrtle Beach lifts north. #NCwx

Further up the coast, I still like snow in Cape COD / Nantucket area. At this point trace line probably is very close to E Mass / C RI area. Funky feeling about ocean effect along & S of Boston tonight before coastal system arrives Sun AM. Nantucket about 6”. #MAwx

Including today, Dayton (DAY) has now spent the last 8 days at/below 18F. This is the longest such streak on record at the site. The current active streak of 6 straight days with subzero temps is tied for the 4th-longest streak on record at the site.
