Today we had a large and unexpected storm come through the park which caused a quick drop in the temperature. This pressure change caused the airflow to reverse, pulling into the cave, resulting in a dense fog filling the Rotunda room!
Mammoth Cave National Park congratulates 29 individuals from 12 countries who became new US Citizens in today’s underground naturalization ceremony. The park was honored to host the event inside a cave room that was temporarily transformed into a federal courtroom.

Jerry is the great-great grandson of Mat Bransford, who along with Nick Bransford were some of the first enslaved guides to lead visitors through the Mammoth Cave.

Given his first camera at age 12 during his visit to Yosemite. He developed his early photographic work as a member of the Sierra Club. He was later contracted with the Department of the Interior to make photographs of national parks.

We are now officially 426 miles. This announcement comes during the park’s 50th anniversary celebration of the Flint Ridge-Mammoth Cave connection which earned us the title of longest cave in the world.

Today is World Animal Day.
Mammoth Cave is home to over 100 species of animals and insects. Most of these animals never leave the dark environment of the cave and are eyeless & translucent. Below is a cave crayfish (Cambarus aculabrum)

Today is National Take a Hike Day. Mammoth Cave National Park has over 80 miles of surface trails that are great for hiking. So give us a visit or go take a hike today on your favorite trails.
Jerry Bransford is a 5th generation cave guide at Mammoth Cave. Jerry’s great-great grandfather Mat started guiding tours at Mammoth Cave in 1838 and continued to do so well up into his 70s. Jerry has guided tours at Mammoth Cave for 19 years.
Frost ribbons in the park this morning!
Frost ribbons or flowers as they are sometimes called, result when freezing temperatures cause sap to freeze and then while expanding extrude through ruptures in the stem of a plant creating long ribbons of ice.

The limestone that makes up Mammoth Cave is from an ancient sea that covered the area over 300 million years ago. In this limestone, you will find the fossils of creatures that inhabited this sea.

Did you know that Mammoth Cave is home to over 160 species of animals? Below is a crayfish that makes their home in the underground rivers of the cave. These animals live their entire life in total darkness, as a result of this they are eyeless and translucent.

The World’s Longest Cave Is Now Even Longer!!
Explorations by the Cave Research Foundation has revealed 8 new miles to Mammoth Cave making the total count 420 known miles of passages! When it comes to discoveries in Mammoth Cave, there truly is no end in sight!

November is Native American Heritage Month. Native Americans explored over 17 miles of Mammoth Cave with cane reed torches as their light source. Curiosity is believed to be the first reason for this exploration, but they also mined gypsum, mirabilite and epsomite from the cave.
On September 9, 1972, six people from the Cave Research Foundation entered a cave on Flint Ridge and traveled for twelve hours before they discovered a passageway that connected the Flint Ridge to Mammoth Cave. This connection made Mammoth Cave the longest cave in the world.

Most of Mammoth Cave was formed by underground rivers carving out its passageways, but the cave also has beautiful domes and pits that were created by water flowing vertically. An example of this is the Mammoth Dome.

American Bald Eagles are present in Mammoth Cave National Park and have nested near the Green River for the last several years. Two potential nests were spotted at the beginning of March, so there should be baby eagles soon!

In honor of Veterans Day, Mammoth Passage tours will be free of charge on Saturday.
Visitors will still need to obtain a ticket from the visitor center and meet with rangers under shelter A five minutes prior to the scheduled tour time.
