The more educational settings understand about child development, how the brain & nervous system works, the better we will be at developing ways to better teach & children learn.🧠🌱

You cannot punish & exclude pupils into behaving well, or you will continue to play whack- a-mole. This fuels resentment & creates a breakdown in pupil relationships, which is at the heart of so many challenges in education. You teach skills to change troublesome behaviour.🧠🌱

The Story That Trauma Tells. If we infused trauma informed / responsive approaches into our education systems, this would help us understand the stress response system to help our young people deactivate these defensive manoeuvres that ensure their survival.🧠🌱

Trauma isn't just stored in the mind,it lives in the body. The body holds on to these experiences with physical responses.Fight, flight ,freeze adaptations, reminders of past dangers to triggers as though we are still under threat even when we are safe.🧠🌱

Pupils from chaotic environments cause the hippocampus to shrink. A smaller hippocampus can't stand up well to an overactive amygdala, which leads to overwhelming emotions.Attainment becomes difficult until we teach them new skills to manage & respond to emotional experiences.🧠🌱

Are you a parent of Neurodivergent children/child? If you have a spare 20-30 minutes to fill in this form that would be amazing https://t.co/68tXLzlEB3

Yes, & why outdated ideas about consequences that do not work anymore because they miss out on what is actually happening. When we use punishment/isolate,we are actually teaching pupils that big feelings lead to disconnection rather than helping them with co-regulation skills🧠🌱
Kids don’t want to be bad. They want to have their needs met. It’s always a good thing when we can focus on understanding the students and meeting their needs… rather than just reacting to the “bad behavior.”

Hey, @grok, who was the most famous person to visit my profile? It doesn't need to be a mutual, don't tag them, just say who it was

Diverse student needs call for diverse solutions 🧠 Schools that centre inclusion excel in addressing the diversity of student needs. In our webinar 'Building Capacity' we outline several factors that can help build capacity and support student needs. https://t.co/suhwRSZ5yt

We all know young people are not the same. Different lives, different brains & different needs ,yet some schools treat them as they are chronologically & not developmentally.A child might br 12 but had the neuropsychological infrastructure of an 8 yr old.Think stage not age 🧠🌱

You can’t build a successful education system around shame, embarrassment, detention & exclusion. You can’t create inclusion for all via a curriculum that only works for some. So as the saying goes “If the child doesn’t learn the way you teach, start teaching the way they learn.”

@SHAAPAlcohol @InstAlcStud Am I missing something as I can’t see anything about FASD? Do the 2,300 children born every year in Scotland, who will go on to meet severe impairment in 3 or more nd areas not count as alcohol harm? Currently many won’t even be diagnosed but will have lifelong impacts of PAE

Childhood trauma can rewire the brain, heightened in a state of arousal. Hypervigilant & waiting for the next bad thing to happen, symptoms from neural pathways struck on autopilot. A brain & body that has been trained to expect danger after years of toxic stress.🧠🌱

Trauma informed means that you have a "BASIC" understanding of trauma & what it is. Responsive is where you should be.A responsive school setting is continually evolving, meeting pupils specific needs.Biological underpinnings, developmental difficulties, behavioural difficulties🧠🌱
