Using non-invasive MRI, we found a pathway in dog brains that predicts receptive vocabulary size. Itβs left-lateralized & connects regions that produce and perceive vocal communication. A convergently evolved arcuate fasciculis? Read at @CurrentBiology: https://t.co/nTrX3aQGPV

Do extreme head shapes in dogs correspond with altered brain morphology? The answer is yes, according to my newly published paper on skull-brain covariation in dogs!
onlinelibrary.wiley.com
Using T2-weighted MRI studies of 79 dogs, we find that skull shape covaries with brain morphology. Dogs with extreme skull shapes β brachycephaly and dolichocephaly β show regional reductions in...

E.g., we observed complex sulcal configurations in the somatosensory cortex of Arctoidea species with pronounced forepaw dexterity, Canidae had the largest number of major sulci with a unique occipital cortex sulcus, and social canids had an additional frontal cortex sulcus.

Applying this framework, we observed multiple distinct regional variations in sulcal anatomy potentially related to the species' behaviour and ecology.

We obtained primarily post-mortem brain scans from 18 carnivoran species, reconstructed the cortical surfaces using @neurabenn's precon_all and examined neocortical sulcal anatomy to establish a first framework for systematic interspecies comparisons.
