10 ways to EARN THE RIGHT to lead your teammates:
1. KNOW them.

4. BELIEVE in them.
5. OUTWORK them.
6. CARE for them.

And do it Every. Single. Day.
Students today are TERRIFIED of FAILURE.
Many see it as a threat to their own identity.
The safest place a kid can fail is on a team w/a great COACH who’ll teach them how to:
1. Try a new skill
2. Receive correction
3. Adjust
4. Work til it’s right
5. Be proud of themselves
The LITTLE things make a BIG difference.
1. SAY yes ma’am/sir
2. SMILE first and often
3. SHOW kindness
4. STOP for trash and pick it up
5. SEE the best in others
6. SHARE the best of you
When you are faithful with LITTLE things, you can be trusted with the BIG things.
There’s a lot to like about this, but I really love
@josealtuve27
humility in this interview.
1. Gives credit to:
- God
- Fans
- Teammates
- Opposing pitcher
2. He accepts credit for his role, but doesn’t inflate his role (though he could)
3. Points the focus back to the team
The best teammates...
1. CALL you out when you get out of line.
2. CHALLENGE what you claim is your best.
3. COMPETE with you in everything you do.
4. CARE enough to care.
When you lower the standard you cheat your Athletes.
Don’t lower the standard when:
1. It's INCONVENIENT.
2. It's TOO HARD.
3. It's TOO COSTLY.
The standard is the standard!
Therefore:
1. ENCOURAGE more
2. TEACH more
3. INVEST more
Don’t ask less…GIVE MORE!
What kind of teammate are you?
CONTENT: I SHOW UP when I want
COMPLICIT: I DO what I am told
COMMITTED: I WORK HARD for MY goal
COMPELLED: I SACRIFICE for my TEAM
It’s the BIG question we have to answer, no matter the team we are on.
Be the teammate you want to have.
BODY LANGUAGE...
-communicates things that our words never will.
-will always tell the truth.
-speaks even when we don’t intend it to & it has no filter.
-proclaims what we really believe about ourselves & others.
-speaks LOUD and OFTEN.

What a GIFT!
Excited to welcome Jack Colter Mackey to the team!
8lbs. 3oz + 20”
Dec. 2, 2019 11:10pm
My Bride, big bros, sister, & Jack are all doing GREAT!
Praying that Jack will be a light in the dark places and force for what is right, honorable, and faithful to the Lord!
My mother, Mary Mackey, passed away on Tue.
She was 76, and had been married for 55 years. Her life is a beautiful testimony of love, grace, faithfulness, and the Fruit of the Spirit.
She chose to be my mom, and changed my life forever.
Thank you all for your prayers.
Five ways to be ALL IN on your kids:
1. COACH the person not just the player
2. TEACH the student not just the subject
3. BELIEVE in who they can be not just who they‘ve been
4. LOVE who they are not just what they do
5. CELEBRATE their progress not just their victories
When you lower the standard you cheat your Athletes.
Don’t lower the standard when the standard becomes inconvenient.
Don’t lower the standard when the standard is too hard.
Don’t lower the standard when the standard is too costly.
Don’t. Lower. The. Standard.

8 Lies About Leadership:
Leaders must be LOUD, TALENTED, & POPULAR.
Leaders must KNOW ALL THE ANSWERS & PUT PEOPLE DOWN.
Leaders can’t have BAD DAYS, MAKE MISTAKES, or SHOW WEAKNESS.
4 Truths About Leadership:
Leaders SERVE
Leaders LOVE
Leaders GO FIRST
Leaders COMMIT & CARE
6 Rules of a Culture of Character:
1. TEAM goals > YOUR goals.
2. Bring your BEST work to the HARDEST work.
3. The “easy way” out always costs more.
4. EARN the right to lead DAILY.
5. Your CHARACTER will determine your ACTIONS.
6. WIN for the TEAM by DYING to SELF.
LIES TO LET GO OF:
1. ENTITLEMENT: You're owed success
2. GREEN GRASS: It's better over there
3. PERFECTION: You can't get it wrong
TRUTHS TO HOLD ON TO:
1. WORK: Success is earned
2. COMMITMENT: It's greener where you water it
3. WORTH: You are more than your best/worst day
It takes ZERO TALENT to be COACHABLE, but it’ll make your talent better.
1. BE THANKFUL your Coach cares enough to coach you.
2. LISTEN with your goals in mind, not your pride.
3. GIVE great effort and don’t make the same mistake twice.
4. SHARE what you learn w/teammates.
The LITTLE things make a BIG difference.
1. SAY yes ma’am/sir —> Respect
2. SMILE first and often —> Joy
3. SHOW kindness —> Empathy
4. STOP for trash and pick it up —> Pride
5. SEE the best in people —> Hope
6. SHARE the best of you —> Leadership
To be COACHABLE is to practice:
1. HUMILITY: Leave space for what don’t know.
2. PATIENCE: Soak in today’s lesson.
3. DISCIPLINE: Work hard at the hard stuff (not just the easy work)
It takes ZERO TALENT to be COACHABLE, but it will make your talent better.
When you get corrected, which are you?
PRIDEFUL
“Yeah, whatever.”
FORGETFUL
“Oh my bad!” (Again and again)
INTENTIONAL
“Yes sir/ma’am.”
“Thank you. May I ask a question to better understand?”
“An intelligent person is always eager to take in more truth…” Proverbs 15:14
A great teammate:
1. COMPETES w/you like their future depends on it
2. SACRIFICES for you like your future depends on it
3. RECEIVES correction as eagerly as they do praise
4. OWNS their mistakes not just their achievements
5. Is HARD to play AGAINST, but EASY to play WITH
CONFIDENCE is knowing who you are & not being afraid of it.
CONFIDENCE is having an accurate view of yourself.
CONFIDENCE is not thinking too much or too little of yourself.
CONFIDENCE is believing that who you are is enough.
CONFIDENCE is found in HUMILITY.
Been through the ringer lately.
Mom passed; the next day Dad tested positive; quarantined w/him & away from wife/kids until the funeral (thankful for the Vax!); & then officiated Mom’s funeral.
Thank you all for your prayers!
God’s peace truly surpasses all understanding!
Husbands:
1. Call your wife your “Bride”, not “momma” or “the boss”.
2. Win her heart by dying to self daily.
3. Give your all at work, but your best to your Bride.
4. The best way to love your kids is to love your Bride.
5. “I Do” is the start of commitment, not the end.
Leadership is a FIGHT.
A FIGHT to HELP others, not USE others.
A FIGHT to be the right size—not too big, not too small.
A FIGHT to put the TEAM before SELF.
Leadership is a FIGHT and the only way to win is to understand…
Leadership is not about you.
When you get corrected, which are you?
PRIDEFUL
“Yeah, whatever.”
FORGETFUL
“Oh my bad!” (Again and again)
INTENTIONAL
“Yes sir/ma’am. Thank you. May I ask a question to better understand?”
I know who I want to be.

Last night, 2 months & 5 days after mom, I held my Dad’s hand as he went home to Jesus.
It’s such a gift to be his son, & to have been there with him. I am thankful for all the ways he made me who I am, & to carry on his legacy of selflessness.
Well done, Dad, well done.
Some abilities take ZERO talent:
ACCOUNTABILITY: Surround yourself w/ the right people
AVAILABILITY: Be ready to serve in season & out
DEPENDABILITY: Do what you say you will do
CREDIBILITY: Work to earn the right to lead
VULNERABILITY: There is no shame in your struggle
Americans spend:
- 1 TRILLION mins watching sports
- 52 BILLION mins watching OFFICE reruns
- 26% of teens spend 8+hrs/ DAY on social media.
Yet the
#1
excuse for why people don’t reach their goals?
“I don’t have time.”
The next 24 hours are a gift. Spend them well.
Change is hard.
Change is uncertain.
Change is uncomfortable.
BUT change is way easier than being stuck somewhere you don't belong.
"Failure is not fatal, but failure to change may be." – John Wooden

2. Always tells the truth.
3. Speaks even when we don’t intend it to & it has no filter.
4. Proclaims what we really believe about ourselves & others.
5. Speaks LOUD and OFTEN.
There is a huge difference between CORRECTION and CRITICISM.
One is meant to BUILD UP & the other to TEAR DOWN, but BOTH can be a gift.
Never forget, even a broken clock is right twice a day!
Next time you get called out, be thankful for the gift!
If you cheat yourself in PRACTICE, then you'll cheat yourself in a GAME.
If you cheat in a GAME, you'll cheat yourself for the rest of your LIFE.
Why is this true?
Because the one constant you have in practice, a game, and life is...
Y.O.U.
YOU become what you repeatedly do.
It’s TOUGH to LOVE people. Love anyways.
It’s TOUGH To SERVE. Serve anyways
It’s TOUGH to be disciplined. Do it anyways.
It’s TOUGH to be a LIGHT. Shine anyways.
It’s TOUGH to SACRIFICE for others. Pay their price anyways.
It’s TOUGH to be TOUGH.
But TOUGH PEOPLE WIN.
5 Ways to ENCOURAGE & LEAD your teammates:
1. WORD: Celebrate genuinely, specifically, & truthfully
2. EXAMPLE: Go first & bring the juice
3. BELIEF: See the best in them
4. SUPPORT: Be faithful W or L, on & off the field
5. CONFRONTATION: Love them enough to call them out

5 Ways pride will get you STUCK in failure:
1. EGO: I thought I was better...
2. EMBARRASSMENT: They thought I was better...
3. EXPECTATIONS: I should be better...
4. ENTITLEMENT: I deserve better...
5. ERRORS: I can’t believe I’m not better...

It’s the BIG question we have to answer, no matter the team we are on.
Be the teammate you want to have.
There are no words.
My heart hurts with, and for, the families of Uvalde.
So thankful for the coaches & teachers who will show up tomorrow, the next day, and everyday after in Uvalde, and in schools across the state to be there for kids.
Kids need you now more than ever.
A great teammate:
1. COMPETES w/you like their future depends on it
2. SACRIFICES for you like your future depends on it
3. RECEIVES correction as eagerly as they do praise
4. OWNS their mistakes not just their achievements
5. Is HARD to play AGAINST, but EASY to play WITH
Love doesn’t have a SWELLED HEAD.
Love is HUMBLE.
Love doesn’t shout “Look at me!”
Love quietly SERVES YOU.
Love isn’t me first.
Love is WE first.
Love doesn’t lie.
Love deals in TRUTH.
Love NEVER quits.
Love NEVER fails.
In sports and life: Love WINS.
If you cheat yourself in PRACTICE, you'll cheat yourself in a GAME.
If you cheat yourself in a GAME, you'll cheat yourself in LIFE.
Why?
Because the one constant you have in practice, a game, and life is...
Y.O.U.
YOU get great at what you get reps at.
Kids don’t need you to add more PRESSURE on them. They put enough pressure on themselves. Instead they need:
1. More ENCOURAGEMENT
2. More COACHING
3. More EQUIPPING
4. More LOVE (tough love counts)
5. More I BELIEVE IN YOU
6. More HOPE
Go be the MORE that’s needed today!
If we STOP calling right right and wrong wrong, we will START calling right wrong and wrong right.
Truth, integrity, and courage still matter.
Even if you must stand alone, STAND UP!
Leadership doesn’t have to be complicated.
LOVE your teammates:
Value them as PEOPLE not just PLAYERS.
SERVE your teammates:
Give the best of you FOR the best of THEM.
ENCOURAGE your teammates:
Share GENUINE, SPECIFIC, and TRUTHFUL affirmations often.
Students deserve to be told the TRUTH about their ability, role, & potential.
Especially if it’s a HARD TRUTH.
But the harder the truth, the more love is required.
A great COACH will speak truthfully about where a kid is AND love them enough to help them reach potential.
5 Choices that VANDALIZE your locker room from the inside out:
1. IGNORING conflicts.
2. TALKING ABOUT each other, not TO each other.
3. EXEMPTING poor character bc of talent.
4. LOWERING the standard when it gets hard.
5. Believing your job DOESN’T matter.
Great teammates don't look for:
- a WAY OUT when it's hard.
- a NEW team when this one struggles.
- What's in it for ME (consumerism)
- An EASIER way.
- Excuses.
Great teammates look to:
- get STRONGER
- get BETTER
- SERVE more
- do the HARD work
- ELIMINATE excuses.
I used to THINK the best ATHLETE was the best leader.
Now I KNOW the best LEADER is the best SERVANT.
“The most crucial ingredient in a team that achieves and sustains historic greatness is the character of the player who leads it.”
@SamWalkers
You ALWAYS get caught when you skip a rep.
You can sneak one past Coach.
You can mislead a teammate.
But you can NEVER lie to your INTEGRITY.
It is always watching. It always knows. It can never be fooled.
Skip one rep and you cheat two people.
FAILURE happens. When it does:
1. OWN IT. If you own your mistake you own the power to change it.
2. ASK why until you know why.
3. REMEMBER the lesson & FORGET the loss.
4. TRY again. It’s OK to get knocked down, just don’t stay down.
💡Failure is an event not a person. Zig
Things You Will Never Regret:
1. Being a TRUTH TELLER
2. Giving your BEST WORK
3. Serving OTHER PEOPLE
4. Pushing through HARD CHALLENGES
5. Asking for, and RECEIVING HELP
6. Saying THANK YOU
7. Arriving 10 minutes EARLY
8. Believing in YOURSELF & OTHERS
9. Trying ONE MORE time
Not all abilities require talent:
ACCOUNTABILITY: Surround yourself w/ the right people.
AVAILABILITY: Be ready to serve in season& out.
DEPENDABILITY: Do what you say you will do.
CREDIBILITY: Earn the right to lead.
VULNERABILITY: There is no shame in your struggle.
UPDATE:
THE BIG RIG HAS BEEN FOUND!
It’s gonna need some work, but it will be good as new soon!!
And most importantly, the stuff of my Dad’s was still there!!!! I am so very thankful!!
Thank you all for your prayers!
Culture is about who you are.
WHO YOU ARE changes the effort you give.
WHO YOU ARE changes the choices you make.
WHO YOU ARE changes how you serve.
Schemes will help you start, culture will help you finish.
"Culture will beat scheme every day." Chip Kelley
Let YOUR standards determine YOUR work ethic.
Being better than someone else isn’t enough when you can be BETTER THAN YOURSELF.
Don’t let your work ethic change based on your opponent.
Be more motivated by INTEGRITY than you are by success.
If you want to be a leader:
Encourage 3 people everyday. In a year, there will be 1095 who will be better because of you.
That’s leadership.
Make sure your encouragement is:
1. True
2. Right sized
3. Timely
4. Genuine
5. Tactful (no backhanded encouragement)
6. Specific
Forget the tit-for-tat way of doing things.
Serve WITHOUT expectation.
Serve even when it costs YOU.
Serve because you are a LEADER, not because you want something in return.
"You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him."
Today is a gift. No matter what comes your way—good, bad, or ugly— RISE to the challenge and DO THE WORK required.
Do the HARD WORK because you LOVE your:
- teammates
- goals
- impact
- integrity
- because you said you would
Whatever the reason, today:
RISE AND GRIND!
5 ways pride will get you STUCK:
1. EGO: I thought I was better...
2. EMBARRASSMENT: They thought I was better...
3. EXPECTATIONS: I should be better...
4. ENTITLEMENT: I deserve better...
5. ERRORS: I can’t believe I’m not better...
The most important photo I took all week at

I am so very thankful for my wife, Teressa.
Her strength, resolve, belief, support and commitment are some of the most important building blocks for 2Words..and me.
Without her, I’m not the man I am today.
I love…
It takes ZERO TALENT to be COACHABLE, but it’ll make your talent better.
1. BE THANKFUL your Coach cares enough to coach you.
2. LISTEN with your goals in mind, not your pride.
3. GIVE great effort and don’t make the same mistake twice.
4. SHARE what you learn w/teammates.
Are you ready for the truth?
Ok. It’s this easy:
Stand in front of a mirror and compete against THAT person!
Don’t quit, sleep or stop until you made THAT person better!
Then, go to bed. Wake up. Repeat.
The eternal battle will always be simply YOU vs YOU!
There is no cheat code.
There is no shortcut.
There is no hack-your-way to your goals.
There is only HARD WORK.
The goals you seek are found IN the hard work, not BEYOND it.

Top 5 Abilities of a LEADER
ACCOUNTABILITY: Surround yourself w/ the right people.
AVAILABILITY : Be ready to serve in season& out.
DEPENDABILITY: Do what you say you will do.
CREDIBILITY: Work to earn the right to lead.
VULNERABILITY: There is no shame in your struggle.
Raise your hand 🙋🏽♂️if you have ever failed at something.
It. Happens. Guaranteed.
What is NOT guaranteed is that you FAIL FORWARD.
Hear this well:
What you DID is not nearly as important as what you DO with what you did.
“Failure is an event, not a person.” Zig Ziglar
Success will cost you
COMMITMENT: Don’t just make them, keep them.
INTEGRITY: It’s hard to show up when no one will know if you don’t.
WANT TO: Everyone wants to win when they get praised; few want to work when they’re not.
Success is expensive and it’s currency is sacrifice.
In a “LOOK AT ME!” Culture, I challenge you to SHOW ME!
Don’t tweet your wants.
SHOW ME your WORK.
Don’t add it your story.
SHOW ME you will SACRIFICE.
Don’t be about it *because* they are watching.
SHOW ME you’ll work the same when NO ONE is watching.
What kind of teammate are you?
CONTENT: I SHOW UP when I want
COMPLICIT: I DO what I am told
COMMITTED: I WORK HARD for MY goal
COMPELLED: I SACRIFICE for my TEAM
It’s the BIG question we have to answer, no matter the team we are on.
Be the teammate you want to have.
I just want to say THANK YOU!
5 years ago TODAY the idea for
@2Wordstv
was born.
I believe kids need men & women of character coaching now more than ever!
Y’all are my heroes & it’s my joy to be on the front lines, beside you, FIGHTING for our kids.
The best is yet to come!
INTEGRITY leads to CONFIDENCE.
I have nothing to fear. I know who I am.
CONFIDENCE leads to VULNERABILITY.
I have nothing to hide. I will show the real me.
VULNERABILITY leads to TRUST.
I have nothing to lose. I am in this with you.
TRUST is the currency of leadership.
It’s tough to trade...
1. PRIDE for HUMILITY
2. I KNOW for TEACH ME
3. WHY ME for WATCH ME
4. NOT MY FAULT for I’M WRONG
5. EXCUSES for OWNERSHIP
But that’s why TOUGH PEOPLE WIN.
Are you TOUGH ENOUGH?
Who controls your INTEGRITY?
💥YOU!💥
Who controls your ATTITUDE?
💥YOU!💥
Who controls your EFFORT?
💥YOU!💥
Who controls your COMMITMENT?
💥YOU!💥
Who controls your FUTURE?
💥YOU!💥
Who is the most POWERFUL person in your world?
💥YOU!💥
What do you do when things don’t go right?
When you:
- perform poorly
- lose focus
- forget an assignment
- are short tempered
Hit the RESET BUTTON.
Reset your:
-mind
-emotions
-body
When things go wrong, remember:
You have the power. It doesn’t have to be this way.
When you lower the standard you cheat your Athletes.
Don’t lower the standard when:
1. It's INCONVENIENT.
2. It's TOO HARD.
3. It's TOO COSTLY.
The standard is the standard!
Instead:
1. ENCOURAGE more
2. TEACH more
3. INVEST more
Don’t ask less…GIVE MORE!
Success is expensive and it’s currency is sacrifice.
You’ll either sacrifice for your dreams, or you’ll sacrifice your dreams.
Either way, SACRFICE REQUIRED.
Choice is yours.

I believe with all my heart that TOMORROW’S leaders are built in TODAY’S locker rooms.
COACHES raise up leaders that live for something GREATER than “me, myself, and I.”
Forget About Me I Love You
“The purpose of influence is to SERVE those that have none.” Rick Warren
The measure of your character is what you do when it COSTS you MORE TO DO RIGHT than it would to do wrong.
Remember:
1. What happens in the dark always comes to the light.
2. Right is right even when no one is doing it.
3. Wrong is wrong when everyone is doing it.
Student-athletes tell me the feeling they feel the most is OVERWHELMED and STRESSED.
That PRESSURE and WORRY are constant companions.
But they don’t want it to be easier. They want more ENCOURAGEMENT and EQUIPPING.
They need a TIME OUT at strategic times.
Here’s an idea👇🏽
