BOYCOTT BARCLAYS UNTIL PALESTINE IS FREE!
@RollingStone
called it: we ain’t stopping here 🔥
The Great Escape is over, and all the musicians that boycotted it have made music history!
Direct action fucking works! Great turn out for
@TLFBristol
demo against the transphobic hate group Women Talk Back. They backed off and didn't do their TERF talk on campus! No TERFS at Bristol uni, or Bristol in general ffs!

Musicians need to be more honest and open about money. It's a kick in the teeth when band's say they are DIY or independent, but have the money to pay for radio play or to pay £500 to get on a big Spotify playlist.
Don't get offended if someone asks you how much you got paid for a gig or how much your PR cost or how did you get on that playlist. Just tell the answers! Spread the knowledge that the music industry doesn't want people to know without the big bucks. Be more accessible!
Straight white male punk band's have been doing the same shit for 50 years.
It's dull.
Go and see DIY gigs, listen to queer band's, if you don't know female band's do some research.
It's not hard.
Thanks everyone for your support & lovely messages ❤️look after each other❤️ we're not replying to any hate tweets, let them argue to themselves. Liberation for women isn't possible without liberation for all trans people, all gender non conforming people and all minorities!✊️
If you are a band that has the money, fair. But tell everyone that's what you did. Be honest about the industry and put work in to change its accessibility for those who cannot afford to do so.
But they don't tell people that's what they are spending or doing. It gives working class musicians false hope that you can work hard on your music and get those opportunities naturally. Musicians help feed into the lie of neoliberalism.
If we've played a festival that you wanna play at, we will tell you how we got that slot and give you the contact details. We will tell you how much we got paid so you can work out a fair fee. For musicians to have a fair playing field these things need to be spoken about.
@ClashMagazine
Would be great for you to do an actual piece on the boycott, the new research into Barclays funding announced today, the 50+ acts who have already pulled out of TGE and how boycotts have worked through history. And maybe post a disclaimer that you are partnered with TGE this year
People shouldn't be donating their money or x amount of their wages to the NHS - it should be properly funded by the government as a NATIONALISED HEALTH SERVICE WHICH IS PUBLICALLY FUNDED BY OUR TAXES.
It seems we can't rely on TGE partner, Clash Magazine, to post a fair & balanced article, so we've written a letter of our own. We recommend all artists stop looking to other artists to absolve their guilt and instead do the right thing - boycotting all Barclays gigs this summer.
I strongly believe all music venues of all sizes should have a house backline, including a drum kit, guitar, and bass amps AND heads! Don't expect every band to be able to afford or have access to gear!
Punk was birthed from anger & oppression & filled with people of colour and women and queers from day one and it's never portrayed as that, punks hero's are all white men and that rhetoric needs to end. We fight against the oppression we faced historically and now, through music
🚨 BREAKING: Half the lineup of The Great Escape are calling on the festival to drop Barclays as a partner, over the bank’s role in the Gaza genocide.
The festival remains silent, so artists are now cancelling their sets.
As a working class musician I often feel a sense of imposter syndrome, but I realise that even in the DIY/Indie scene different forms of pay to play are massively at work. If we don't talk about this, and money in general, we are stunting way more musicians before they've began.
🍉 ALL ACTS FROM THE OFFICIAL TGE OPENING PARTY HAVE PULLED OUT!!!!🍉 Huge respect to Congratulations, Safe Nath, Tala Yunis, Fari and Heights, for standing shoulder to shoulder and taking collective action in solidarity!!
WITHOUT ARTISTS THERE IS NO FESTIVAL!
#BoycottBarclays
We work our butts off and I'm so proud of us as a band, but it is so disheartening looking at lineups or tours, or publicity and opportunities, that we just aren't getting and ask myself why or how can they & not us... then I realise the answer that everyone is hiding... MONEY.
And it makes the identifiers of being a DIY or independent band more difficult and competition based. We should be lifting each other up and making sure there's nowhere for exploitation or people getting ripped off.
If anyone wants to know how we do anything in our band, please just ask us, we are an open book! We started with no experience, no team, no money. We have been booking our own gigs for 7 years. We have only just signed with a label at the end of 2023. Transparency is important!!!
BREAKING: A total of 77 acts have now withdrawn from The Great Escape. All artists cite the festival’s partnership with Barclays, “bankrolling genocide” through its financial investments in companies supplying weapons to the Israeli military, as their reason for withdrawing.
I know alot of our fans were swmrs fans & I just saw lydia's tweet, just wnated to say am sorry they have let you all down & treated Lydia & their fans badly - abusive, controlling, coercive & gaslighting behaviour is not okay & more needs to be done to stop this in music scenesx
Every DIY band out there just give yourselves a big hug and round of applause cuz you out there working your little butts off and I see you and it's hard but it doesn't go unnoticed ❤❤❤ am here to moan about it with lol
@ Rishi Sunak hun I'm a support worker for homeless and vulnerable young people and a musician... please tell me how I should look for a better job... I'm having to pick up from all the failures your government is doing to vulnerable young people, with housing, and music!
Yesterday we got an email about some Spotify playlist - packages start at £750. If we had that kind of money and took up that offer maybe we'd look better in other peoples eyes. But it creates an unfair divide and unspoken truth between similar band's.
Our new single Class War is about the importance of joining a union and holding your workplace and peers to account. Workers rights are being taken away from us at an alarming rate, and the best way to combat this is with collective bargaining and activism.
Our song Make Girls Feel Good got played on BBC Radio 6 today 😍 shout out to Craig Charles for giving us a spin, especially on the day some irrelevant DJ said that he won't play unsigned bands cus they are crap 💅
So much BMTH hype rn... Wasn't Oli Sykes accused of urinating on a girl and assaulting her because she didn't want to have sex with him, and also accused of DV towards his ex-wife????!!!
Wow who knew modern punk looks exactly like how the media portrayed it in the 70s and 80s too - white cis men. We really are in a new era for modern punk omg I'm so pleased we have white boys singing about issues to educate all of us 😍
One time, the police shut our gig down cus of complaints about our band name lol, and I love listening to radio DJs cringe when they have to say our band name out loud on air 🤣
Dear Up-And-Coming Punks
Names like Fucked Up, Mannequin Pussy, and Pissed Jeans might seem funny in the moment but wait until the alt weeklies start rejecting you for reviews and video premiers and we'll see who's laughing
Signed, an elder punk who's learned a thing or two
Wonder how many men in punk bands get asked to prove their working class-ness, or is it just womxn with opinions must have some money behind them to dare speak up?
Hey I'm Abi (she/her), and I’m the new bassist! I started playing bass last year during the winter lockdown, but I’ve been playing drums for ages in a number of different projects (The SinicTones, Broke Honey & No Feathers)
(1/3)
It's been a whole week since our latest single Abortion was released! Thanks everyone for the streams, downloads, shares, support, and kind words about it, we really appreciate it, especially since it seems social media are not pushing out this track as much as our last one...
Lol sorry some of us are broke and didn't go to private school and have to graft in full time jobs as well as trying to be independent musicians in this climate where small and medium sized venues are shutting down left right and centre and can't afford the luxury of escapism 🥱
Thanks to everyone who has shown us support these past few weeks ❤❤❤❤ we appreciate every one of you and makes all the crap worthwhile 💛💛💛💛 keep fighting the good fight ✌✌✌✌
Wow
@MCRPunkFest
, that was a special one❤️ I am v hungover & don't have the capacity to write anything profound, but genuinely thank you to every single person who watched our set and packed out the room, I love & appreciate you all. Big up to all the MPF crew and volunteers ✊️
PSA: The Alt Escape IS part of The Great Escape Festival. So if you think you're boycotting and not supporting Barclays by playing The Alt Escape, I'm sorry, but they have misled you, and that is incorrect.
Good night everyone! -- We don't have an album coming out soon, we currently don't want to work with any label, PR, Booker, plugger, agent etc. We aren't even a full band atm. Am just expressing how I feel and have experienced things to get off my chest and open a dialogue xx --
Don't make money and create a fanbase from being moderately left wing in your lyrics and interviews and then not use your platform to ask your fans to register to vote.
This is the fault of Boris Johnson. This is the fault of racism and not being challenged. This is also the fault of Labour MPs who have repeatedly slagged off Corbyn in public and sided with the Tory media against him. You are all to blame and we will never forgive you.
Body Politics is out tomorrow! Can you believe we haven't released new music since 2018!!! We're super excited for everyone to hear this new single! Get ready for the new era of The Menstrual Cramps ✨️

This is a sad sad evening. I can't believe it.
@jeremycorbyn
is the best leader I have seen in my lifetime, the best manifesto I have seen in my lifetime. Prior to Corbyn I never voted Labour. I have been actively involved in politics since 14 years old. Tonight I am devastated.
Just an FYI, after all the Roisin Murphy shit, not only is her new album popping off in the charts with all her new TERF fans, but Fat White Family still got her on stage to sing Touch the Leather with them on stage in London on the weekend 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
BIG NEWS 🤩 our song I Like That Top is in an amazing new film that is going to be premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival tonight!!! The film is called Sweetheart 🏳️🌈, written and directed by Marley Morrison, produced by Hazey Jane Films

What an amazing moment, we all cried & cheered in complete joy. I grew up & went to school here, Bristol is my home, we were never taught about Colston, & barely spoke abt Bristol's part in the slave trade. To see this be teared down in front of me was joyous & a long time coming
Procrastinating in the form of playlist-making...
So i've put together 40 of my faves of the year 💕
It includes some amazing bands / artists that I've been lucky enough to host at
@getinherears
gigs xx
Listen here (& follow & support all the bands) 🎧
When I was 14 me and my best m8 tried to run away to Brighton to become strippers in gay clubs. We made it from Horfield to Bradley Stoke (in Bristol) with a Bart Simpson skateboard and dug a hole in the woods to shit.
We aren't in the 70s anymore though... inflation... recession... rising house prices... living expenses... the value of £50 now would be worth £778, I just Googled it using the CPI inflation calculator.. so that's our new gig fee 😊
Interesting following the Nadine Shah/IDLES support band fee debate...normally a support band gets offered £50 like in the 70s with an occasional sniff at £100 !
Bristol Trans Pride on the same day as The Doctor being canonically non-binary and Rose being an openly trans character on the show! I'm not crying, you are 😭🏳️⚧️

I can think of at least a couple of high profile, successful UK bands that market themselves as socially progressive and leftist who have been silent re: registering to vote/the general election so far. Stakes are too high not to be explicit about what you support at this point.
Why are radio stations so shit? Our tape player in our band car broke and now we are subject to the horror of regular radio stations. They all play the same songs every day! Sometimes they play one great song followed by 20 songs of absolute shite. What's the deal with that?!
Just because somebody isn't walking around saying the n word does not mean they are not racist. Also lots of people do still walk around and say the n word! All forms of racism need to be tackled and needs to be confronted head on by white allies who can afford to do so.
