Happy to report that @falk_huettig's and my Letter in Cognitive Science is out! . LLMs are likely to threaten literacy acquisition but they might also support it. Cognitive Science can help steer the outcome in the right direction! . Read it for free here:

(1) In a letter to the journal Cognitive Science @MH_Christiansen and I ask “Can large language models counter the recent decline in literacy levels?” We believe the answer is yes but see an important role for the field of cognitive science

#3 relates to our discussion of gestural vs. vocal origin of language, where we talked about Tomasello's thought experiment in which kids either could communicate only using gestures (without sounds) or only using (non-speech) vocalizations (no gestures). Go for both?.3/4

#2 is memefying the results from the Slobin & Bever (1982) study of the acquisition of word order and inflections in different languages. Kids learning Serbo-Croatian were behind because of they have to pay attention to both word order and case (though Turkish kids did fine).2/4

Every year at the end of my Psych of Language class, I ask my students to make memes about what they've learned. They vote for the best ones. Here are top-3 memes:.#1 is a new take on Quine's classic gavagai problem (warning: philosophical puzzles can make you lose sleep).1/4
