Essoldo cinema, Stretford, 1960s. Originally the Longford, opened 1936. Now disused for more than two decades. I used to go to the kids' screenings there.

An older woman in the pub carrying a tray of drinks into the beer garden just said to everyone "two soups" and nobody reacted and I think I love her.

John Edward Taylor, cotton merchant who founded the Manchester Guardian, died #OnThisDay 1844. The paper was described by a rival, working-class paper as a β€œfoul prostitute and dirty parasite of the worst portion of the mill-owners.”

#OtD 1 Jan 1934 Nazi Germany enacted a law which forcibly sterilised more than 400,000 disabled people. Later they began murdering them, killing 250,000. Their rhetoric about disabled and ill people being a burden on workers is still widespread today.

Interior of the Manchester Royal Exchange, 1877, by H. L. Saunders (d.1899) and Frederick Sargent (1837-99), @mcrartgallery. At its peak, up to 11,000 cotton merchants traded every Tuesday and Friday. While Liverpool traded raw cotton, Manchester traded goods for global export.
