You may not think appropriating federal relief money to nonprofits is a contentious task, but Tulsa City Council proved otherwise.
🧵 of my coverage of council’s American Rescue Plan Act process, which was far more captivating (and high-stakes) than I was expecting.
Boismier quit NPS when a parent complained after she put butcher paper over her bookshelves with the words “Books the state doesn’t want you to read” in light of HB 1775.
She also gave out a QR code to Brooklyn Public Library, which has the Books Unbanned project.
BREAKING: Education Secretary Ryan Walters has asked the state board of education to revoke former Norman Public Schools teacher Summer Boismier’s teaching license immediately.
In a statement given to the media, NPS said they want teachers to teach students to think critically, not tell them what to think.
Boismier said the classroom is an inherently political space, and that she can't fully teach indigenous, Black and LGBTQ stories without discomfort.
UPDATE: To the knowledge of the state Department of Education, this would be the first revocation of its kind in Oklahoma, if it happens. Teaching certificate revocations are almost exclusively tied to a teacher’s criminal behavior.
As the state Department of Education votes on Tulsa Public School’s’ accreditation, a massive walkout at Booker T. Washington High School is happening.
There are at least a few hundred students out here.
Norman Public School students are holding a walkout following allegations that teachers are following trans students to the bathroom so they don’t use one that corresponds w/ gender identity & punishment for trans students who use bathroom that corresponds w/ gender identity
At Norman North covering a student walkout following allegations that trans students were being monitored to the bathroom, and that students were being threatened with discipline if they didn’t go to the bathroom that corresponds with their birth certificate.
For the record, we have:
- Never mentioned RW once
- Worked for 36 hours to not deadname Nex
- Not reported anything that wasn’t in an official record
- Included OPD’s and OPS’ statements about the autopsy report and school response
We’re not lying or obscuring anything.
Since the state legislature passed permitless carry, guns stolen from cars in Norman went up 70%. This follows EXACT patterns in other states with the law.
I asked one of Norman’s senators who voted for it about the spike. He attributed it to defunding police and the homeless.
BREAKING: McCurtain County Gazette releases two more articles, including a QR code to body camera footage in the death of Bobby Barrick as well as full three hour audio of meeting that resulted in calls for resignation.
It's time for, as they say, some personal news.
Today was my last day at The Transcript. On Dec. 5, I'll start as a news anchor and reporter with
@KWGSNEWS
.
It's been my goal to move home to Tulsa for a while, and to work for my hometown's NPR affiliate is a dream come true.
"Ryan Walters forgets that he has been either state superintendent or secretary of education for three years. So if you want to talk about outcomes not getting better, that’s your job as well."

I regret to inform you that “lived in NYC for a year, moved back and now think I’m smarter than literally everyone” is definitely a personality in Tulsa…
Libs of TikTok made an out-of-context video going after a Union Public Schools employee, which was shared by Walters and followed by a week of bomb threats against the district.
No one has done more to expose what the radical left is all about than
@ChayaRaichik10
and
@libsoftiktok
. Her's is a powerful voice to protect Oklahoma kids from porn in schools and woke indoctrination.
I'm proud to have her on our team.
At Nathan Hale High School in Tulsa Public Schools. Folks are supporting students as the state school board prepares to vote on TPS’ accreditation status.
Here are some of the signs and shirts present.
I’ve got breakthrough COVID. It really just feels like a cold — I can taste everything, I’m not fatigued, and I’m working from home with absolutely no issues.
This vaccine works.
Tulsa County Emergency Management Director Joe Kralicek said the county has submitted a request for emergency declaration to the state. Kralicek said Stitt's folks told him they'd try to get it finalized by end of business hours yesterday.
Awaiting comment from the Gov's office.
Possibly overlooked part of Oklahoma’s TikTok ban: Many social media managers for city governments, state departments, etc. have started using the app, which gets young people civically engaged. The ban could affect that.
Tulsa folks! I start at
@KWGSNEWS
tomorrow. My goal is always to hold the powerful accountable, uncover wrongdoing and give voice to EVERYONE in the metro area.
If you have a story idea, my DMs are open! I'd love to hear it and connect.
I talked to Idabel mayor Craig Young about the McCurtain County sheriff's statement about the recordings. He called the statement "a joke."
I also asked him about the hospital threat. He said if the four resigned, "a lot of this shit will go away."
One of Tulsa’s conservative city councilors said that, on a visit to OKC, a Housing Alliance worker “set him straight” when he asked if mental illness or drug addiction was the leading cause of homelessness. They told him no — it’s a lack of affordable housing.
@OKCFOX
"... But the work doesn’t stop. The governor trusts the pertinent agencies, especially the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, to continue their work to reduce homelessness, in addition to ongoing efforts happening at the local level.” (2/2)
- I've caught the trooper giving statements about
@MaureeTurnerOK
lying before
- The Democrats unanimously say they never requested Turner's censure, contradicting Moore
- Terry O'Donnell allegedly changed law to get his wife a job and was charged with a felony but not censured
The Norman Fire Department had a "wall of shame" with uniforms of firefighters who retired for their mental health. It was a microcosm of a culture that compounded job stresses, leading to addiction, depression and suicidal thoughts.

about the charter school vote. It's worth your time.
"They either are getting very bad legal advice or they are basically not taking the time to understand or read any statutory law or Constitutional law."
My dad, a right-leaning evangelical Christian, stopped saying “committed suicide” after I explained the origin of the phrase. He also knows his son is a survivor.
It’s not about being p.c. or refusing to use phrasing that makes you look “soft” to your peers. It’s about respect.
Jacob Rosecrants has filed a bill to fully repeal HB 1775, which bans Oklahoma public schools from teaching anything intended to make people uncomfortable on the basis of race or sex. It’s been used to lower Tulsa and Mustang public schools’ accreditations.
My first bill to file for 2023 is HB 1031, also known as the Restoration Of Sanity in Education Act. HB 1031 repeals HB 1775, which is a very broad and insidious classroom censorship bill which was passed and enacted in 2021.
Because
@GovStitt
opted out of the summer EBT program that would give kids $40 a month to spend on meals,
@MuscogeeNation
pooled together money to give exactly that amount to kids.
Unlike
@GavinNewsom
, we know better discipline means better outcomes for students. That's why we are rolling out new discipline policies for Oklahoma schools.
RE: Body cams.
In Norman, Okla., 4 officers chased the wrong man and shot a 60-year-old woman in his car.
The news release never says if he was driving at the officers. When I asked, they were evasive
I asked because 3/4 officers had their body cams TURNED OFF the whole time.
Here’s the thing: In the U.S., we mostly leave police to police themselves. And so, we left police in control of the footage.
They decide who can see what and when.
Journalism grads aren’t asking for an engineer’s or architect’s salary right out of college. We’re simply asking for a fully livable wage for the market we live in and serve.
This story is picking up attention, and as someone who covered public safety in this exact county, I thought I’d share some additional context about the jail, the sheriff’s office, the health care provider & the police department who arrested Mr. Price. Feel free to read this 🧵
THIS is one of the most shocking jail lawsuits I've seen: An mentally ill man with an IQ of 55 who was being held on $1000 bail literally *starved to death* in an Arkansas jail.
They put him in solitary, he decompensated - and he died. THREAD:
After OHP spun out a car and killed Ethan Mestes, a trooper told me “the science shows” that suspects won’t stop driving recklessly if troopers terminate the pursuit.
Available empirical data on this topic says the opposite.
Walters testified to Congress Sept. 19 that TPS “maintains an ACTIVE connection” with the Chinese Government. This was a month after the district terminated its contract with Confucius Classroom.
Great work as always by
@walliswrites
I’m not in Norman anymore, but between everything that’s been uncovered about OTA, NPD, Greg Mashburn, NPS, city council and OU in recent years, I still believe that community 100% needs robust journalism to expose corruption and ensure accountability.
In light of
@ryanmwalters
' video on federal funding, I'd like to share this story again. He spoke to us about how he plans to assess and potentially cut federal programs here, and three school districts throughout the state said how it would affect them.

This news might come as unexpected for some, but here goes…
This is my last week in Arkansas. I’m headed to the OKC area, where I’ll be news editor of
@NormanNews
starting Tuesday.
I look forward returning to my home state and giving it the great coverage it deserves.
“I told (Talley) I would co-author this bill with him, that this would be an easy bill to carry because there’s going to be nobody who’s for corporal punishment on students with disabilities,” said Rep. Anthony Moore, R-Clinton. “Apparently I was wrong."
Just picked up my copy of

At Tulsa City Council, where they’re voting on a resolution to designate Tulsa as an inclusive city.
Councilor Laura Bellis told me the language in red that’s crossed out (see below) was stricken after negative community feedback.
"Republican lawmakers want to reduce the number of appointments Stitt gets to the State Board of Education, Veterans Commission and the Turnpike Authority board — all governing bodies currently stacked with the governor's appointees."

Support local news.
Even if you don’t love an outlet, find a reporter or two that you like who works there. It’s fairly easy to do on here.
💯
@KTULNews
It's pretty damn cool how many talented reporters there are in this state, and how we all hype each other up when one of us drops a bombshell of a story.
Let's keep this thing going!!
Kunzweiler questioned why a mental health crisis in the state — with unhoused people getting involved in the system, a wait list for treatment facilities and a spiking suicide rate — doesn't qualify as an "emergency" worthy of Stitt's $2.8B of savings.
Ryan Walters said Summer Boismier tried to provide students access to pornography. That’s false.
Boismier never recommended Gender Queer w/ QR code & didn’t have it in her classroom. An attorney who’s prosecuted sex crimes in OK compared her actions to sharing a link to Google.
Fantastic reporting by
@walliswrites

This news comes as
@DOJPH
is investigating Oklahoma’s lack of mental health services leading to unnecessary encounters with police.
It’s specifically for OKC, but the services being investigated are statewide. And this is exactly the kind of situation they’re talking about.
Norman residents loved her cookies, and now many are distraught at news "Cookie Cottage" owner Shannon Hanchett died alone in a Cleveland Co. jail cell. She was there for 10 days, arrested during what police call a "mental health episode" at another Norman store.

INBOX: 61 Oklahoma state legislators — a third of the State Legislature (17 Democrats, 44 Republicans) — have signed a letter urging State AG John O'Connor have an evidentiary hearing for Richard Glossip, who's on death row.
Glossip is set to be killed Sept. 22.

@walliswrites
and I interviewed
@TulsaSchools
Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson today. I can confidently say she was one of the best people I’ve ever interviewed.
We will not be airing clips from today’s OSDE video. We will tell folks it happened, and contextualize the fact that it happened with information about the ongoing situation.
Police often have a “if you help us, we help you” mindset toward reporters. Don’t dig up dirt on us & we’ll give you interviews and treat you with respect.
It’s tempting for reporters to play along because it actually does make the beat easier. But the public suffers.
Quote from Oklahoma’s Republican labor commissioner at last night’s town hall:
“We have members of the Legislature who are thinking, ‘If I pass this tax cut, I can be governor someday.’ Guys, what the hell are we doing?”
Can every reporter (myself included) take a moment and read this, and then promise to always request bodycam footage/ask really tough questions about vague language in police news releases? Ok cool. Thanks.
BREAKING: Oklahoma lawmakers are calling the state Department of Education to investigate Summer Boismier for a possible violation of HB 1775.
HB 1775 bans schools from teaching anything that makes students uncomfortable on the basis of race or sex.
At the Norman Public Schools board meeting. We’ve got several folks wearing “Read Banned Books” shirts that were made after former teacher Summer Boismier quit after a complaint that she made political statements in the classroom.
It’s nine till, so follow along if you’d like.
Does “woke” = Black or non-white to the Oklahoma Secretary of Education? And does his tweet relay that he doesn’t want “woke”?
Many distort the meaning of “woke,” which was integrated in public discourse by people working to spread awareness and galvanize people to end racism.
- Hanchett calls 911 for welfare check on children
- Calls again when NPD officer asks for more info; charged w/ making false 911 calls
- Another officer arrives; they pin her to the ground & arrest her
- Held on misdemeanor bond; found dead 12 days later
The Cleveland County Election Board has just confirmed to me that the sheriff uses people detained in the county jail to transport ballot boxes every election.
More to come on this.
PREVIEW: Norman police will have a use of force report from a researcher and an SRO report presented at the city council meeting Tuesday night.
A 🧵 on why this is significant:
BREAKING: The Norman Public Schools board has voted to fire teacher Rick Cavett for leaking racist and threatening graffiti found in a high school bathroom to a parent.
Michael Neal, president of the Tulsa Regional Chamber, spoke today at the induction ceremony for the Black Wall St. Chamber president. His organization petitioned to get the reparations lawsuit dismissed.
Another reporter & I asked him for comment. He declined to comment.
Thing is, the pattern Norman is exhibiting happened in cities in states with permitless carry YEARS before 2020. And when I asked NPD, they said more and more people are leaving their guns unconcealed in their unlocked cars.
Getting a Molotov cocktail thrown through their window after a drag performance last year has not kept the folks at The Donut Hole from showing support during Pride Month.
Between
@apseanmurphy

I was holed up in my apartment waiting to get a test. I go out to get my mail, and my neighbor, who had little girls, started barreling towards me to get his mail. I fell back into my house, told him I might have COVID, and he said, “Oh, I don’t care.”
The dissonance, I swear.
