Wastewater testing has become famous thanks to COVID-19, but scientists are also using this method to track opioids and other high-risk drugs. Covered this trend (featuring a recently-started @BiobotAnalytics program) for @sciam: https://t.co/aeOBGfYdhk

I had a reader recently ask me why, in @thesicktimes, I haven't yet definitively said the US is in our "second biggest COVID wave yet" or cited millions of daily infections. Thought I'd share my response here, in case it's helpful for other folks:

We’re in another covid uptick with a rapidly growing new variant to start the new year. Hospitalizations are much lower this time, but as with any wave of mass infection, vulnerable people are at greater risk and many will develop long covid. Free link:

The JN.1 variant, covid hospitalizations and wastewater levels are rising. But hospitalizations and deaths are lower than in previous winters.

Something that I did not predict at the start of the pandemic: One of the biggest heroes would be 💩. Kudos for wastewater monitoring!

Great article in @sciam from @betsyladyzhets. How to use wastewater data to help keep your family healthy over the holidays. Wastewater data is like a weather report but for health. Instead of "do I need an umbrella?", think "do I need a mask?" https://t.co/KJ0G615z0P

RSV, influenza A, and SARS-CoV-2 concentrations are increasing sharply in the Northeast. Overall, respiratory virus circulation is high nationwide.
Data as of December 16th show a significant increase in influenza across the nation, with a 42% increase in influenza A concentrations. The Northeast is seeing the most severe increase for both Influenza A and B, as well as RSV.

Testing for fentanyl, xylazine, and other substances in San Francisco wastewater is a really big deal! I'm very proud of @BiobotAnalytics' partnership with NIDA and excited to support SF in translating these data into applied public health action

Wastewater data update📣 RSV remains high but we may be close to the seasonal peak. Meanwhile, COVID-19 is highest in the Midwest and Northeast, and influenza is rising across the US, driven primarily by influenza A. See our latest analysis here:

A benefit of sequencing SARS-CoV-2 in #wastewater is observing how the virus changes. Our data shows that a combo of new mutations, called FLip because they involve two L to F amino acid mutations, are increasing in the US. #WBE #populationhealth
