All 16 of Michigan’s electoral votes have OFFICIALLY been cast for
@JoeBiden
and
@KamalaHarris
Today’s vote proves that our democracy and cherished principles remain strong.

Wear a mask.
Wear a homemade mask.
Wear a mask with a pattern.
Wear a mask that says “masks suck.”
Wear a mask with a Trump logo.
Just, please, wear a mask. 😷
Governor Whitmer of Michigan has done a terrible job. She locked down her state for everyone, except her husband’s boating activities. The Federal Government provided tremendous help to the Great People of Michigan. My Justice Department and Federal Law Enforcement announced...
Today, I issued an open letter to Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfield calling on them to enact and enforce a mask mandate within the Michigan Senate and House chambers.
Let’s be clear — if you’re voting in-person, you have to vote (or be in line to do so) by 8PM today.
If your
#vote
didn’t matter, they wouldn’t be trying so hard to take it from you. Get out there and get your vote in the bank!
As a Black man...
As the first Black Lt. Governor in the history of Michigan...
As the first Black president of the state Senate...
It was appalling and disgusting to see a confederate flag chosen as the face mask by a sitting state senator.
Michigan,
These last 24 hours have been tough, and frankly this entire year has challenged all of us.
I want to thank you for all of your support. We have your backs, and thank you for having ours.
Have a great weekend.
#StandTALL
For the first time in Michigan’s history, Black men lead both chambers of the state Legislature. Representation matters and I am honored to have the opportunity to deliver for all Michiganders in a meaningful and unique way.
Meet Ruby Madeline Gilchrist, born happy and healthy on Wednesday June 19 at 1:37 p.m. She checked in a 7lbs. 11 oz. 20.5”, and the first person she laid those big beautiful eyes on was her daddy. Thank you
@ellengilchrist
for, once again, being my superhero

Today, as the first black Lieutenant Governor of our state, I will be gaveling in the 100th session of the

From the White House: “Pres. Trump has continually condemned white supremacists and all forms of hate. Gov. Whitmer is sowing division by making these outlandish allegations. America stands united against hate and in support of our federal law enforcement who stopped this plot.”
In this election, just like every election in the history of this country, the people will decide the outcome.
I need YOU to be one of those people who will decide the outcome.
It feels like the perfect moment to remind
@dananessel
and
@JocelynBenson
how grateful I am for their dedication and hard work, and how proud I am to serve our state with them. These women from Michigan are the best of the best!
When I said
#Michigan
was becoming a national leader on criminal justice reform, I meant it.
@GovWhitmer
& I will be joining
@MeekMill
for an Instagram Live at 6:20PM ET about Michigan’s criminal justice reforms.

BREAKING: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer toughens a requirement to wear masks during the coronavirus pandemic, mandates that businesses open to the public deny service or entry to customers who refuse to wear one.
BREAKING:
@GovWhitmer
will be ordering bars and restaurants in Michigan to close dine-in seating later today. Only service will be delivery or take out.
She told me this today in her first 1-on-1 interview since declaring a state of emergency last Tuesday.
@9and10News
COVID-19 is a constant reminder of how dangerous racial disparities and inequality are for people of color. 14% of our population is Black, but more than 40% of deaths are in Black communities. I’m working alongside
@GovWhitmer
to make Michigan a leader in addressing this.
Black people are so tired.
Tired... of trying to convince the world that
#BlackLivesMatter
.
Tired... of living a double standard.
But we are more tired of dying.
And that’s why we dedicate every ounce of our energy today to
#JusticeForAhmaud
BREAKING: The Major Disaster declaration requested by
@GovWhitmer
has been approved for Michigan. This is a good start and will help us continue to fight this virus.
In Michigan, schools and places of worship can do some things in person because of the actions we’ve taken to slow the spread of this virus in spite of your failure.
But keep tweeting while we lead.
We just got a BIG win for the people of Michigan. Open up your Churches and your Schools. Auto companies pouring in and expanding (thank you Mr. President!). Have fun!
Last night, two Republicans tried to challenge the foundation of our democracy. I’m so thankful for all of the people who stood tall to protect our voices and votes. That’s how democracy works!
With all eyes on Michigan today, our state proved that we would not let politics get in the way of the people’s voice.
🚨 Michigan’s election results are officially certified 🚨
We have formed the COVID-19 hotline. Public health experts will answer health-related questions about the virus and direct residents and providers to the right resources.
The hotline will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1-888-535-6136.

Today, I tested positive for COVID-19.
I currently have no symptoms, and I’m grateful that being vaccinated protects against serious illness. I encourage everyone to keep doing all they can to keep each other safe.
With Thanksgiving coming up, we are out here at River Rouge High School with
@BigSean
and
@hillharper
to give away more than 5000 turkeys. Giving back is a family affair because we are all family.

Here are some quick facts about racial disparities:
14% of Michigan’s population is Black.
40% of COVID-19 deaths have been in the Black community.
💯% of us need to get behind
@KamalaHarris
bill to address racial disparities.
Today, I'm announcing my new bill to create a COVID-19 Racial and Ethnic Disparities Task Force.
We need a serious, targeted effort to address the reality that Black and brown people are disproportionately being infected and dying from COVID-19 across the nation.
Wanted to take a minute to thank a special guest who joined us today. Alyssa is truly dedicated to the mission of equity and justice. I appreciate her and welcome her to our mission here for democracy that works for everyone. Thank you,

Our collective pain is real. Our parents and grandparents gave us the peaceful tools to combat injustice with justice. As hard as this feels, we must summon their courage and self-discipline in our own actions.

To the good people of Michigan: we see you. We hear you. Your voice is what drives change now and always.
All of us must be the relief. We must organize. We must speak truth to power. We will get through this together.
#Detroit
is home to people whose lives matters. Children whose dreams matter. Workers whose potential matters. Families whose futures matter. Leadership is about uplifting & empowering our communities, not insulting & dismissing them. That’s what I will keep doing. You do you.
Whether you call it Vote by Mail or Absentee Voting, in Florida the election system is Safe and Secure, Tried and True. Florida’s Voting system has been cleaned up (we defeated Democrats attempts at change), so in Florida I encourage all to request a Ballot & Vote by Mail!
#MAGA
You left our state on the very day we hit a record-high number of new COVID-19 cases to do the president’s bidding...
Before your meeting to undo democracy begins, could you at least ask the president to pass a relief package to ACTUALLY help Americans?
Good trouble.
All of the good trouble you made paved the way for so many people to make history in your footsteps.
We will carry forward your legacy of good trouble so that the next generation can be, believe, and become their greatest selves.
#RestInPower
In 2020, Republicans tried to overturn my vote as a Detroiter.
Now, as they try to take away other Michiganders’ right to vote, you better believe I’ve got something to say about it.
Today, I renamed the Lewis Cass Building in Lansing to the “Elliott-Larsen Building,” honoring the legislators who sponsored Michigan’s landmark civil rights act. This is the first time in our state’s history that a state building is named after an African-American woman.
Thank you
@briancalley
for the conscientious words of encouragement as I embark upon this journey of service to the people of Michigan.

Michigan Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist speaks out on the recent use of the Confederate flag by

No matter how we personally feel about abortion, we must come together to ensure our fellow Michiganders have the freedom to make healthcare decisions for themselves and their families without interference from the government.
Implicit bias doesn’t just mean race or ethnicity. It also impacts the quality of service delivered to men or women, rich or poor, urban or rural.
But with COVID-19 disproportionately killing Black people, implicit bias on race is a good place to start.
You've probably heard that our FY2024 budget provides funding for every 4th grader in Michigan to get a free field trip to a state park.
Some will be lucky enough to visit Tahquamenon Falls State Park -- a Northern Michigan gem.
More than 40% of coronavirus deaths in Michigan have been Black residents, yet our state’s Black population is only 14%. That’s why I’m leading the Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities to tackle this injustice now and in the future.
#StandTALL
This captures what’s real about
@GovWhitmer
: She proudly represents all of Michigan & always thinks about making the future bright for families, including the youngest Gilchrist.
Proud to
#StandTALL
alongside her as our state bands together to rise to and through this moment.
Last week,
@GovWhitmer
and I formed the Black Leadership Advisory Council - the state’s first council to bring Black voices directly to state government.
Applications are due August 19. To apply, go to and select the “Black Leadership Advisory Council”.

We’ve been through so much this past year. It’s a relieving feeling to join the millions of Michiganders who have already received their vaccine.

Many members of my family were proud union members. They, and other union members, paved the way for me and people like me.
I stand with UAW workers and encourage a speedy resolution. I’m all in on team Michigan.
Today, justice was served for George Floyd and his family. As a Black man in America, I have felt the sting of racism and injustice personally, and too many of our brothers and sisters know the visceral pain and exhaustion that communities of color face every day.
I’ve seen our communities step up in incredible ways during this pandemic.
Right now, local restaurants need our support. That’s why I’m asking everyone to join me in getting takeout over the next three weeks.

To everyone who feels unheard: I hear you. To everyone who feels unseen: I see you. To everyone who feels silenced: we can join our voices together.
#StandTALL
As a Black man in America, it’s hard enough to breathe most days. We’re dealing with two crises-COVID and police brutality-that are slowly stifling the breath of Black people. That’s why it’s important that we dedicate each breath to peaceful action.
#JusticeForGeorgeFloyd
This flippant disregard for human life and loss in Michigan is dangerous and destructive. I have lost 23 people to COVID-19. We must put all hands on deck and all resources on the table to prevent people from getting sick, care for those who do, and stop anyone else from dying.
MI Senate Majority Leader Shirkey generally OK with feds not sending any more relief funding: "Some states have crippled their economies, like Michigan, based on the actions taken, and we just need to suffer through it for a cycle or two until the economy gets back on track."
Today marks four weeks since Ruby Madeline Gilchrist entered the world and my return from paternity leave. We are tremendously blessed to have her join our family. I’m thankful for the opportunity over the last few weeks to form such a close bond with Ruby.
Good Afternoon, Michigan!
A quick update on our vaccine progress: Michigan is expected to receive our largest shipment of more than 400,000 vaccines this week.
Good Morning, Michigan!
#BlackHistoryMonth
is a moment to recognize the history-making feats of those who came before us, but it’s also a reminder to keep an eye toward the future of progress.
Today is a day of reflection and recommitment.
We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make important things happen across Michigan. We can go further. We can deliver more. We can make life easier for those struggling to get by. We can make a difference for decades.
I'm so excited to be joining Gretchen and Team Whitmer.
This election is so important, and I'm thrilled to be working with Gretchen to build a better Michigan.
Let's get to work!
No child can focus on learning with an empty stomach.
@GovWhitmer
’s budget would provide free breakfast and lunch to all 1.4 million Michigan students. Let’s get this done and work to ensure no Michigan kid is going to bed hungry.
