An incredible & rare performance of #Messiaen’s majestic Turangalîla Symphony by the Radio Philharmonic in the @Concertgebouw under the baton of Karina Cannelakis. Do we need more proof of the importance of public radio & art funding? @radiofilhorkest @ZaterdagMatinee

A message that needs to be repeated again, especially in times of polarisation: “science is not the enemy”. And even if you live in the unfortunate situation where food & air are making you sick, science can help you…
I’m not a bot. I’m not anonymous. I’m a chemist with a PhD. My goal here is simple: Make people smarter, not angrier. So let me say it clearly: Your food isn’t poison. Your air isn’t killing you. Your medicine isn’t a conspiracy. Science is not the enemy. Fear is. If you’re

Yesterday in the beautiful depot @boijmans we celebrated the 23d Erasmus-Descartes Conference on the theme of Food Sovereignty with young & old(er) talents in the presence of deputy minister @jean_rummenie, ambassadors @f_alabrune & @JanVersteegBZ (&with a surprise recognition)

I argued over 2 years ago that #AI is an integral part, possibly a stage, of human & biological evolution. AI backed machines will meet many of the criteria for independent life: reactivity, metabolism & procreation. See
The advent of AI might be just the latest stage in a guiding biological process that has produced ever more complex, mutually dependent organisms over the history of life https://t.co/XgLosDGAND

Now that disappointments on climate negotiations increase, I turn back to what I wrote 30 (!) years ago on Climate CoPs in @nrc. It is in Dutch (please use a translation program), the gist being that hammering on pessimism doesn’t get us moving…

Excellent figures on GHG emissions of livestock to put matters in perspective. Of course, for individual gases & specific types of livestock (think CH4 from cows) figures may be important on a continental scale. Would be good to update annually!
If you're wondering how much livestock in the EU is contributing to global greenhouse gas emissions, here's the answer: 0.99%. For North America, the number is similar (0.98%). For Australia + New Zealand: 0.24%

So important to keep an open mind, esp on a sensitive subject where emotions & even ideology play a strong role - and the science is not clear, esp not on long term trends. New methods such as these to measure #insect population fluctuations may help.

The recently opened library of the University of Amsterdam in the labyrinthine former university hospital, right in the historical center, is a splendid combination of respect for the monumental structure and bold innovation. Oh to be student again in these lovely rooms!

Watson’s scientific work was monumental, but his later life proves that intellectual brilliance is no guarantee for wisdom. For those who use this to mistrust science: people, also scientists, may be wrong, but science itself has ways to avoid mistakes through permanent scrutiny
Watson – who won the Nobel Prize for his role in divining the structure of DNA; was instrumental in initiating and propelling the Human Genome Project; and who became notorious for his history of racist and sexist comments – has died at 97 Read the full story:

Abolishing the “cum laude” distinction for PhDs as one NL university has decided, because women have a proportionally lower chance to receive it, sends the wrong signals: 1. The problem doesn’t go away that way, 2. Quality distinctions are important to nurture talents @tweetsunl

Everyone should know these stats. But most importantly, farms of <2ha rarely survive (unless highly specialized), young generations will not want to farm. Consolidation of farms, subsidies to modernize equipment & abolish backbreaking work, training in entrepreneurship are needed
#LandDegradation threatens land's ability to sustain us. The good news: Reversing 10% of degraded cropland can produce food for an additional 154 million people. ▶️Learn how smarter policies & greener practices can turn agriculture into a force for land restoration. #SOFA2025

The NL Academy of Arts & Sciences #KNAW has expressed concern re budget cuts at her counterpart, the Flemish Academy. This is the letter, signed by the President & 12 scientists with dual membership. Now that EU is losing science leadership cutting funds sends the wrong message!

At #PAN Amsterdam, the annual art fair, among the gorgeous modern objects, jewelry & Asian art, one surprising stand: the MBO students studying to become artists & artisans already show their impressive skills. A great initiative to build new generations.

Well planned and proper food management are needed to face food challenge.
On world food day: food is more plentiful than ever on the planet but distribution is uneven, production is not sustainable in many places and food is wasted. Hunger still occurs in war zones. But better techniques, attention to health, environment & culture give us hope! @FAO

Refined diet-fed mice: accelerated onset of cognitive decline, inflammatory alterations in liver, impaired glucose metabolism, higher portal endotoxin levels. Adding fibre decelerates cognitive impairments but not liver decline, insulin resistance, or intestinal barrier function.

1-mol invoeren is echt per direct nodig.
