Amazing research that shows being multilingual supports children from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The results in the long term? They outperform their monolingual peers!

Imploring the panel to bring in additional expertise to support multilingual classrooms/ multilingual pupils /EAL. No matter the label, we are at about a quarter of pupils speaking more than one language, and they and their teachers need taking into account.

Speaking of language awareness, this starter activity is a great chance for children to use their language skills to work out what minibeasts are introduced in various languages - while at the same time showing a number of different scripts: https://t.co/tcpXeOpcHS

For outside learning such as minibeast surveys, again, asking children to share words in their home languages not only shows them these are welcome, but also build language awareness, as children compare words across different languages: https://t.co/B2C31w6Ily

Whenever you ask children to draw and label something, invite them to do so using all their languages - you get to see if they've grasped the subject/topic and are just missing some vocabulary, and parents have a chance to fill gaps in the home language: https://t.co/sbOB2mes81

Asking children to create a "River of Reading" gives you valuable insight into home literacy development in all languages, and builds bridges to parents and carers, who help with thinking back to early literacy memories: https://t.co/9QOn7PDX00

Language Portraits are a great visual activity to do as a "getting to know you" - it gives children the chance to share what languages are part of their identity, and an immediate opportunity to show them that all languages are welcome in your classroom: https://t.co/c2uTYGdsxw
